The time has come upon us exmuslims and the like. The worst month of the year. Haramadan.
I've looked for thread for Haramadan this year and there isn't any so far so I thought I should step up to the plate and create one. So there you go.
Now Ramadan has bit of soft spot in my heart, it's the very month I chose to leave Islam two years ago. Nonetheless it is a burden to live in a house where I have to pretend I am a Muslim despite the fact that everyone unofficially knows I am not.
Please feel free to post any tips, tricks or anything that may be helpful to those fake fasting this year (like myself).

Just like Johnny Flynn said, the breath I've taken and the one I must to go on.

I was eyeing bottles of Ensure at the grocery the other day...don't even need to be refrigerated, tiny bottles, quick to drink, vanilla one tastes pretty good...I was drinking them once when I had a health crisis and couldn't eat a lot and they helped me feel much better. I think I'll send some with the husband when he's pretending to fast for his mother when she's here.

The key to surviving Ramadan is water. Water, water, water. Like, insane amounts of it. A gallon in the morning, several through out the night, and more when you break the fast. A lot of the fatigue people feel is not as much about the hunger, but the onset of dehydration. If you don't obsessively make up for the lack of water during the day, you'll suffer.

    And yep, Ensure works wonders!

Eww, chocolate and strawberry are the only flavors please. The vanilla one barely masks the grossness of whatever stuff is in there.

Trick to ramadan for those who don't give a shit is get good at sneaking food and especially water.

If you can't manage that, then just reverse your sleep cycle so you sleep at the times when fasting occurs. Its still pretty shit these days in summer though even with that method.  Cry

If it's possible to discreetly hide jugs of milk, a gallon of whole milk contains ~2400 Calories. A quart in the morning, a quart in the afternoon, and that's 1200 kcal right there, plus it contains a good balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates. But if you are living with the very people you're trying to hide from, this can be impractical since it must be refrigerated and it's conspicuous. In that case, boxes of powdered milk work just as well and contain roughly the same nutrition. Relatively easy to sneak some powdered milk with you into the bathroom, mix it with water, and chug.

Energy-dense foods like nuts are also easy to carry around discreetly. A plastic bag of peanuts, walnuts, cashews, pecans, etc., for example, is an excellent way to snack throughout the day. Careful not to let oily residue get on your hands. Eat with a napkin, or disposable latex gloves if you want to feel like a spy.

And always keep gum or a breath mint to mask the smell of food on your breath, and always have dental floss or toothpicks handy to remove evidence from your teeth.

Hard to believe Ramadan is only 3 days away. My parents seem to have gotten lazy about Islam as of late. I'm bracing myself for Ramadan religiosity in full effect. I don't think I can manage to sneak food in my house. What I'll do is eat food from vending machines at school (when the coast is clear of Muslim students). Grin

This might be a little off-topic: Do any of you have significantly younger siblings? I've noticed my parents aren't making as much of an effort in teaching them about Islam. I don't foresee them being religious in the future.

Hmm....  parents are getting lazy about Islam and olweasel  getting active about Islam... sounds like a reverse brain drain... olweasel   this Ramadan  you observe strict Islamic code  and make sure your parents eat well and does all haram stuff in  this  Ramadan .. and let us see what happens by  next Ramadan .

That doesn't work because your breath just smells of mint, If only there was a way of making it  smell like old socks

The most anoyying part is that I am a 100% morning person and I love having a normal working cycle. I am not planning on becoming nocturnal. I don't eat much to begin with but I drink my water ice cold in the most freezing of winter days.

Ugh I have my final exams in the start or Ramadan too and it would be impossible to go and get pizza from across my school without smelling like it.

I would fast for the whole month if they stopped sending these.

That month of Quran reading my mother makes me do until she forgets to tell me to read by the first week. Such annoyance.

Last year she didn't even fast. FOR ABSOLUTLY NO FUCKING REASON. She felt like she isn't "mentally capable". I swear that women is full of shit. At least we had lots of travel last year and now we have none finmad.

I better start my food stash.

Ramadan fast in UK 'should be shortened' says scholar

14 June 2015 Last updated at 08:31 BST

There is a call for British Muslims to reduce their fasting hours during Ramadan, which begins this week.

Daylight hours last longer here than in the Middle East, and some community groups say the longer fasting time could be harmful.

However, many Muslims in the UK say there is no compromise when it comes to Ramadan.

    Shabnam Mahmood reports.

I don't know what level you are at academically,  but don't screw up your future for a cause you already doubt.

    Just my opinion though.

Lol I live in the desert, and it's fucking impossibly hot, so anyway last year I had gone to the mosque before ramadan for a social thing (which of course involved a khutbah) and even the imam was like "It is Ramadan! And we are happy to be fasting......in July.......in long days......in the desert......[forced cheerfulness] and still we are happy!" He then went on to list a long list of symptoms of heat exhaustion and medical reasons you might have to break your fast, and pointed out that if you need to go to the hospital and get an IV to treat your heat exhaustion/stroke, getting the IV inserted does break your fast, but by that point, you should have already broken it because you're very sick.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for I have a sonic screwdriver, a tricorder, and a Type 2 phaser.

Fake fasting it. Maybe just drinking water.

After the age of 50 you can spew out any excuse for not fasting. It's just is. Yet my mother isn't 50  finmad.

Seriously I don't think I'll bother making any real stab at it this year, the hours are just to long. I'm sure I'll get up during the night to support the missus(she's planning to go all out this time) but as for myself, I'm going to take a rain check.
We were at a prayer gathering recently and I blame the imam there for her renewed lease of faith. He was all reasonable sounding (until you actually process his words) how it's something we should look forward to etc and it's not about the hunger but your heart and our reward won't be in this life but the next blah blah blah. . . but I for one am just not buying it.  finmad
