Qtian I treat atheism like asymmetry, a lack of symmetry.

Theism is a claim. Like any other claim the default position is rejection of the claim until proven otherwise. So atheism does not need a huge burden of proof as that burden is held by theism. Every atheist argument I have seen has been grounded in the so-called agnostic arguments against theism. However I would charge that those that claim agnostic positions while declaring arguments for god are horrible, Hume, as atheist but refuse to use the term since it carried a social stigma in their time. I follow falsification thus theism has not falsified it basic challenge of the default view to any claim. I believe people trip over the default position as a rival claim thus atheism becomes rival claim.

Sorry for the delay, been helping my grandfather out with his electronics for the last few days. The tech that setup his entertainment center did a horrible job. Hiding wiring in base boards is tedious to say the least.

Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box and Religion is the smile on a dog. ........ happy_m

Some of happy_m's statements are so good I like to modify and store them to use them at later times..

Philosophy is the talk on a cereal box and Religion is the  smell  of dog's poop . ...... happy_m

Well..  I took some liberty of changing happy_m's words .. hope he doesn't mind  but Please don't leave that poop in park.,  You know children start playing with it.  you just have to bag it and carry it until you find a trash bin..

Do not let silence become your legacy.. Question everything

The thread is very piecemeal since it was two merged into one. Edits have also removed some of the posts.

^  suppose it depends on your background and upbringing.  An irreligious person born into a non religious environment, who has never given religion much thought may be described as someone who lacks belief in a God, (i think many british lack belief, i don't view them as positive atheists, not sure about other European countries though), whereas a person who is born into a religious environment, or hasn't but has studied religion and then rejects it may be described as a positive believer in no God.   I see many types of atheist.

The term carries a lot of baggage since it was a social and religious taboo for centuries. These type of traditions stick around as a stereotype. Qtian argues from tradition. I reject that tradition as a facade. When one rejects this tradition there is a lot to discuss.

No problem. I hope you've managed to sort it out.

Really, I'm not arguing from tradition. Arguing from tradition is akin to saying that if X is tradition then X is correct by virtue of it being traditional. My belief is that traditional positions on atheism (the ones found outside of online apologetics) better encapsulate what atheism is about. This doesn't mean that alternative positions on atheism are useless, just less conducive to real discussion. One can hold to a traditional position for reasons independent of historical convention. Ergo, arguing for a traditional position doesn't entail that one is arguing from tradition.

However, this is a pretty big discussion spanning topics from epistemology to etymology.  I just can't commit to it at the moment as a lot of real-life things have come up that I need to sort out and I'll need to take a break from the forum. As a result, I have conceded the argument to bogart.

Anyways, this will really be my last post on the topic for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the willingness to take part in this discussion bogart.

My mind runs, I can never catch it even if I get a head start.

I completely understand. As I said there is a lot of baggage with the term in history and tradition. I take issues with both as both influences do not strictly use atheism as you or I have defined it. Many groups have labeled various people ἀσεβής and ἄθεος based on rejection of the Christian god, local, state, etc while these labelled people still believe in their own god(s). From the Christian view God is the only one, every other god is either a delusion, fictional or a demon. Hence these people do not believe in any god from this perspective. Rome uses this type of thinking to label Christians atheists too.

Do not confuse lack with absence, I think this could be the one word causing issues.

Did some more reading and thought about what Qtian has said. I injected pop-cultural atheism as if it had any meaning on philosophy. I concede.
