I want to share my response to someone who contacted me privately (but says he's happy for me to publicly share my response to him). Amongst other things he felt tormented by the idea of his non-Muslim family going to Hell or indeed himself due to his doubts/rejection.
"the compassion and goodness of an individual is enough in God's eyes"
Yes and a thousand times yes!
I completely understand and relate to the fear and psychological turmoil you are going through. Can you imagine how powerful the psychological hold Hell has over those born and brought up in Islam. Believe me few realise the nightmare Muslims go through just to question their religion.
I've been through it and been chewed and spat out and tossed from side to side and tenderised with a chef's heavy metal meat tenderiser lol
But one thing I have come to believe with certainty - and there are few things I believe with certainty - God is NOT a sadistic monster. He is not going to torture anyone. Hell is a man-made myth. It doesn't exist.
*if* there is a God (I do believe in 'something' though I hesitate to use the word God) then he is nothing like the descriptions in the "holy books" - they are all man-made myths. If there is a God he is not a human tyrant. He is not a sadistic human dictator. He is beyond such flawed and petty human traits.
I think one day humanity will outgrow religion. But for now it still provides comfort direction community etc... so I am not against religion and as you see I still identify as a Muslim - albeit an Agnostic Muslim - but I don't for one second have any illusions about the man-made nature of Islam and indeed all religions.
So if you find comfort in some sort of religion - fine! If you can manage without - fine!
It's all good - just remember:
"the compassion and goodness of an individual is enough in God's eyes"
