  • The domestication of the horses in Saudi Arabia
     OP - October 17, 2015, 03:01 PM

I read a while back that there were pottery shards found in Saudi Arabia that attested to the fact that horses would have been domesticated much earlier than thought. I also read that the Saudi government tried to stall the complete excavation on it. Does anyone know of the updates on it?

I don't think this was the same article but akin to it:

I thought you meant hoories. Grin

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

LOl, no, I promise it was horses. I remember reading that archeologists were all excited because this would change the way we understand a lot of human history.

I don't know much about the history of horses. I did once hear in Egypt they believed horses were wind children, born from the winds themselves. Just looked it up, I didn't find anything on Egypt, but this is interesting.

    Quote
One day, a few of us wandered out to the edge of the mountains, and saw something that reminded us of our birth. It was a relative of the Wind, the horse.  We called him ta' hayh. The Wind loved this relative, and brought us to him, because the Wind knew we would love him. We and the horse felt a deep kinship. It seemed ancient, and forever.  We wondered how we ever became separated.

So I think I found where the Egypt thing comes from. I wonder if this was islamically adapted to a pre-existing myth.

    Quote
Finally, a Bedouin story states that Allah created the Arabian horse from the south wind and exclaimed, "I create thee, Oh Arabian. To thy forelock, I bind Victory in battle. On thy back, I set a rich spoil and a Treasure in thy loins. I establish thee as one of the Glories of the Earth... I give thee flight without wings." Other versions of the story claim Allah said to the South Wind: "I want to make a creature out of you. Condense." Then from the material condensed from the wind, he made a kamayt-colored animal (a bay or burnt chestnut) and said: "I call you Horse; I make you Arabian and I give you the chestnut color of the ant; I have hung happiness from the forelock which hangs between your eyes; you shall be the Lord of the other animals. Men shall follow you wherever you go; you shall be as good for flight as for pursuit; you shall fly without wings; riches shall be on your back and fortune shall come through your meditation."
