    You know, hitting your wife with a miswak. While I've heard many a scholar say this,  I've never actually seen any textual justification...is this actually in a Hadith anywhere?

    I am no historian, but I believe it originated in fiqh, as an interpretation of the Quranic verse on beating your wife.

    Is it a form of bdsm? Can wives do it to husbands?

    Naturally, of course not!

    To clarify for anyone that is a little confused

    It's the common thing (along with the scientific miracles narrative) to claim that the commandment in An-Nisa to beat your wives, means only to do so with a miswak, or a hankercheif...but I've never actually come across this unless from apologists

    But Islam is about equality! Therefore wives should be able to beat their four husbands with handkerchiefs, using other ones to tie them up

    Isn't there a hadith where men are encouraged to hang a whip where wives and slaves can see it? Constant reminder of their place.

    Damn, brutal. I've never heard of that, can anyone else shed any light? Would love to find the exact hadith

    It was narrated from Ibn ‘Abbaas that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Hang your whip where the members of the household can see it, for that will discipline them.”

    Narrated by al-Tabaraani, 10/248; its isnaad was classed as hasan by al-Haythami in Majma’ al-Zawaa’id, 8/106

    Some people are saying the Hadith is weak but I remember a teacher mentioning it when I was at school years ago. If it's true then that is seriously fvcked up.
