Noor Mateen, the 30-year-old wife of Omar Mateen, the shooter at the Orlando gay club massacre, is being considered for possible criminal charges, officials say. She knew, and she tried to talk him out of it.

The wife of Orlando terrorist Omar Mateen was right by his side as he bought ammunition, and even drove him once to the Pulse nightclub — but pleaded with him not to unleash an attack, according to a new report.

Officials told NBC News Noor Zahi Salman, Mateen’s second wife, might face criminal charges for failing to tell authorities what she knew before the Sunday attack.

Salman said she was with Mateen as he bought ammo and a holster. She also took him to Pulse at least once to scope it out, according to NBC. But Salman said she tried talking her husband out of a violent attack.

But isn't hate speech allowed as long as you're quoting some religious verse to go along with it?

    Freedom of religion....!

Don't know if I should laugh or cry, but that's the situation right?

A religious man says gays should be killed - he's only quoting the scripture!
An atheist says gays should be killed - hate speech?

A religious man says committing gay "acts" is a sin - freedom of religion! You don't have to like my religion!
An atheist says being openly gay (gay sex included) is wrong - hate speech?

Isn't this where it's obvious that there is special privilege for religious people?

    Bingo.

I just love how Republicans have turned into LGBT supporters overnight.  Let's see if that general fear and distrust against Muslims will make them progressive enough to support same sex marriage and stop the evangelical churches from propagating homophobia in Africa.

I'd like to put my two cents into this as I am both a hater of Islam (which stole ~18 years of my life) and also a sympathiser with Muslims being broadly labelled as terrorists.

For starters, this Omar Mateen guy was a mentally-ill fuck-up. The man had problems. He was a closet gay, who had sex with multiple men and drank heavily (doesn't sound too Islamic to me!) I bet you the guy couldn't recite 2 verses from the Quran even if you paid him. He knew jack-all about Islam.

    However,

The existence of groups like ISIS, Taliban, Alqaeda etc. creates platforms for mentally-ill-fuck-ups like our murderous Omar Mateen to express their hatred through justified means. If Omar was an atheist, his conscience would not allow him to kill so many people, however, because he is led to believe that there is a better place out there in heaven, he carries out his rage with a clear conscience, and THAT is the problem.

Now I hate Islam, I think it's stupid and smart in the same time. I think Muhammad was a prehistoric Steve Jobs essentially who knew how to market "Religion" as opposed to iPhones made by Chinese slaves.

The Muslim community is absolutely sucking ass in its failed attempts to speak out against the atrocities of these few terrorists....simply because they are not united. Everyone is barking up their own tree, divided  dance.

Nope.....  wrong ..both statements are  wrong..  very wrong statements

Omar mateen may have been a closet  gay  at best., I will stress "May be". NO REAL PROOF ., No male partner of him came to tell any thing about him.  What all you have is .,he was visiting LGBT  clubs and drinking beer may be having bit fun with gay folks  and for that reason his wives and his family members  may be his American friends( IF HE HAD ANY)  considered him having gay tendencies

LGBT folks  that are openly LGBT irrespective of their religious background  Muslims or other wise will not become religious radicals and religious rogues that kill people without any good reason.

This  tragedy happened because of his    religious preaching and due to his religious upbringing  that preach hate against LGBT folks and off course  conflicts around his home country  and his problem with his own father  and with his own brain.....etc..etc..

So I will completely disagree with you cellphone 2016.,

and let me read these clips..

I just end up generalizing in life far too often. The Baptists in my town are fantastic people who do an awful lot of charitable works and manage to quite often do the right thing, even when they think no one is watching. Intellectually I understand that even among a Christian sect there is a continuum of opinions and beliefs, but somehow it shocked me to read "a Baptist preacher" etc.
    I know better.

There are many people who do a lot of charitable works but have fucked up politics. It's one of the main reasons Islamists are so popular in the Middle East. They tend to have good social welfare programs in countries whose states lack proper welfare, so they have massive support among the poor and the working class.

In the US, Southern Baptists are very socially conservative.

I personally think that Islam did have a part to play in all of this. He was supposedly a gay man himself, which naturally would have lead to some kind of conflicting feelings about himself and his religion. The fact is, Islam does put homosexual people in a very bad light. They are hated by God, and deserving of the punishment of death according to the hadith:

Abu Dawud (4462) - The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "Whoever you find doing the action of the people of Loot, execute the one who does it and the one to whom it is done.".

(Loot are a legendary civilization in the quran who had widespread homosexual practices)

I personally think that this teaching is what caused him to have so much hatred. I'm sure he was also mentally ill, but we cannot deny that Islam contributed to the mentality that led to him targeting a gay club.

Is there evidence that he was mentally ill? What mental illness did he have? How did it contribute to his violence?

People who are violent are mentally ill. That does not exempt them from prison, but it is the truth.

No, please don't stigmatize mentally ill people. There's nothing linking mental illness with being violent. In fact, mentally ill people are more likely to be victims than perpetrators of violence. There have been many studies on that.

Again, there's no link between mental illness and violence. Claiming that there is shows a lack of understanding of mental illness and the mentally ill.

Violent people are not mentally ill. This is a common statement to make because there's still a lot of misunderstanding about mental illness and how it affects people.
  • Fifty dead at Florida gay club in America's worst mass shooting says news
     Reply #117 - June 16, 2016, 02:05 AM

Violent people are mentally ill. If they were healthy, they would not be violent. There are parts of the brain (such as the amygdala) that are shown to be affected in violent people. These studies are done on prisoners, especially those who are diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder, and/or are labeled as psychopaths.

There are several parts of the brain responsible for regulating emotions such as empathy which are necessary for lack of violence. So it would only make sense that if a person was violent consistently throughout their life, that they have a problem with those areas of the brain. Hence they are mentally ill.
  • Fifty dead at Florida gay club in America's worst mass shooting says news
     Reply #118 - June 16, 2016, 02:12 AM

Mentally ill people can be violent, sure. But that doesn't mean violent people are mentally ill. A lot of violent people are not mentally ill. In fact some of the most violent people in history were driven by romantic ideals, not by a lack of empathy. There is also, of course, the phenomenon of crimes of passion. Again, that shows that violence is not linked to a lack of human emotions.

The man was gay and very religious. He was sexually repressed and full of anger. These are the established facts. And neither being sexually repressed nor an angry person is a mental illness. Unless there's evidence that he had a mental illness, this conversation is not worth having.
  • Fifty dead at Florida gay club in America's worst mass shooting says news
     Reply #119 - June 16, 2016, 02:17 AM

That is debatable. People can be violent due to outside influences such as cult groups (at least seemingly), but some are and some are not. It just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me that someone could be violent and entirely normal at the same time.

It doesn't really matter in the end of the day, we do not have to have this conversation. Omar Mateen was (probably) mentally ill, but that doesn't make a difference in terms of what we do know: he massacred a group of people, and religious influence was a part of the equation.
