History channel has a series called Ancient Aliens. Yep, it's the series where this meme comes from.
    Quote
Ancient Aliens explores the controversial theory that extraterrestrials have visited Earth for millions of years. From the age of the dinosaurs to ancient Egypt, from early cave drawings to continued mass sightings in the US, each episode in this hit HISTORY series gives historic depth to the questions, speculations, provocative controversies, first-hand accounts and grounded theories surrounding this age old debate. Did intelligent beings from outer space visit Earth thousands of years ago?

Here is a three hour documentary that slices each one of the theories presented utterly to shreads. It's a beautiful study in rational thinking and debunking bullshit. Ancient aliens is totally bullshit. Totally. I used to believe in it too...  Cry

Ps. Nibiru is totally on topic here too.

Real life isn't exciting enough, apparently, and has lost its magic to a lot of people. So people look for it in conspiracy theories instead. I tend to look at it the way Dawkins does, expressed quite nicely with his phrase "magic of reality". Educate yourselves about actual tangible, real, scientific facts about the world and it'll be "magical" and exciting enough.

It's just that people are either stupid or lazy, sometimes both, to do any of it. That's my more cynical and somewhat misanthropic take on why "theories" like aliens and whatnot become popular in the first place...
