If you want a straw to clutch at then the figures in the polls are weighted by the pollsters on the basis that older people, who are much more likely to vote Tory, are also more likely to turn out to vote. A higher turnout this time by younger voters might upset the calculations. Then again it’s a big lead to hope to change.

I would suggest that the brexit/corbyn factors are overstated. Austerity has changed the way many britons think, ie they have become less receptive to messages of hope. Hate on the otherhand....

Corbyn has to go. Just not electable enough. Shame because his heart is in the right place.

As for Brexit: today's result will most likely show the Tories eating into Labour's Leave heartlands.

You may be right. I’m getting old, and thinking back I can’t remember it being about Islam. It was straightforwardly about hating people for being Pakistani or black. The boundaries of what it’s acceptable to say obviously changed but I can’t see that the racists themselves have changed much.

the cloud of worry darkens but there could be a silver lining. if the tories pursue secular nationalism (rather than ethnic) and the labour party abandon their patronage of pakistanis (biraderi types and islamic activists) then muslims may have a brighter future in britain.

then again, that silver lining is probably just a lightning bolt on the leading edge of a storm front.
