A 6 part documentary series by Adam Curtis which is worth a watch IMO. It explores the rise of individualism in various forms in the US, China, Britain and Russia in the 20th century the effect of those very different societies. It's self indulgent but in a way that I don't mind because Curtis makes some of the most cinematic documentaries I've seen, combining precious archive footage with hypnotic scores and thread a grand narrative through it.

He also made The Power of Nightmares and Bitter Lake, two films which looked at the West's relationship with radical Islam in the 20th century.

he knitted a fun jumper out of those disparate threads in part 1.

I guess he's purposely contrasting his narrative of concerted forces creating modern reality whilst undercutting it with the discordian theory of pointless chaos.

the doc series does end on an uplifting note. despite my general pessimism, I agree a different reality is possible so long as you can convince enough people to go along with it.

so long as something doesn't happen to empower the old stories, new narratives can be realised. there may be some hope for 'british muslims' after all.

It's ripe for parody but it's still captivating nonetheless, in my opinion. My issue with Curtis is that in his past documentaries, you're left with the masochistic impression that radical Islam is some Western concoction that has its roots in the founding of Saudi Arabia.
