  • Hypocrisy of Muhammed?
     OP - November 04, 2008, 09:36 AM

Can anyone enlighten me on the this idea that Muhammed was upset about marrying his daughter Fatima off because she was too 'young'.

Also it seems that he did not want the husband of his daughter to take a second wife because it might hurt her  feelings yet Muhammed had more than nine wives himself.

    Is this true?

I'm told the references can be found in Bukhari's book of marriage.

I'm not sure about the first one, but he definately didn't want a second wife to his daughter because of her feelings.

I've been told that the first one refers to text in the following

Sunan Al-Nisai book of marriage (3169) but since I don't really know my way around the material I was wondering if someone on the forum had more of an insight.

The only thing I can find in reference to the marriage of Fatima is this:

    Volume 7, Book 62, Number 157:
    Narrated Al-Miswar bin Makhrama:

I heard Allah's Apostle who was on the pulpit, saying, "Banu Hisham bin Al-Mughira have requested me to allow them to marry their daughter to Ali bin Abu Talib, but I don't give permission, and will not give permission unless 'Ali bin Abi Talib divorces my daughter in order to marry their daughter, because Fatima is a part of my body, and I hate what she hates to see, and what hurts her, hurts me."

Just realized something. This hadith demonstrates that a woman can not deny her husband's wish to remarry. Fatima could not just say "No, do not remarry". Muhammad had to invoke the Allah card to save his daughter from the humiliation and hardship of a forced polygamy.

It is interesting that most muslims, being good human beings, directly erroneously assume that in "True Islam (tm)", a woman can deny her husband's request to remarry.

They even get upset when an islamic court grants to a husband the right to remarry against the wishes of the wife. They put their feet down and throw tantrums and scream and shout about how unislamic that islamic court is. Yet even Fatima was unable to deny her husband's wish to remarry and allah had to intervene.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"
