     OP - November 10, 2008, 01:55 PM

    Created the language of tomorrow?

    Ie text speak.

Are we seeing the beginning of a writtten language that will become a valid language beyond the realm of kids using it?

    Is it the new shorthand?

    Views, opinions, discuss......... Tongue

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Agreed, but that doesn't invalidate it. If it increases in common useage and makes reading and writing more accessible to, say dyslexics, for starters, then I'd be all for it. English is a language that especially morphs alot over time, with some words even coming to mean their original opposite. Cleave is an old eg and wicked is a modern one. And look what's happening to affect and effect.
Teaching's not all 'Hough nough broughn cough' in English now  you know. We even do some lesson plans on texting as well as swearing. Language, first and foremost is about communication and if that facility is improved, who can knock it - academics maybe?

Yeah, initially I was against such a bastardisation of the English language as I know it, but lately I have been thinking "what is the big deal" because if they understand it and it works for them, who am I to judge in truth.

English has evolved before, language is always changing, for all we know this could be the standard language in the future and our version of English will seem shakespearean to them.

Yep. After the ice had departed  the original hunter/gatherer Brythons followed it northwards. The Celts came next, probably subsuming them. Then the Romans, the Anglo/Saxon/Jutes, the Norsemen, The Normans and many waves of refugees and imigrants. Thats 5/6 major influences incorporated and what's the most used word in English? Curry - that's what. Good isn't it.
c.800,000 words against c. 200,000 in Spanish. Crazy but brilliant.

Heh. How much more incomprehensible will Shakespeare be? But then again, if we keep reading the same books (classics), our language shouldn't change too much. But then again, how did Mark Twain define 'classic' books? "Classic: a book which people praise and don't read."

    ROFL! WWJD AFK!  Roll Eyes

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

Books, Bah, Humbug! And why do  Muslims and Christians and Hindus and Buddihists still have stone age mindsets? Couldn't be anything to do with the books they read would it?

I can't stand 'text talk' on normal forums or in e-mails. I guess it's the English Lit student in me talking but I just can't cope with it. It burns my eyes.

I don't mind it in actual text messages though, because characters are limited so I can understand why people would use 'text talk'.

I don't even use "text talk" in text messages. It's just as easy to send a message in English and it's much easier to read.

Don't you think it is comparable to short hand?  if you had a secreatary who used short hand to make notes, what would you think of a friend who had a secretary who used txt speak instead?

I can't text. I'm sooo slow so I don't even bother. It's weird because my peers can probably text while they sleep. Textspeak reminds me of Newspeak. No thanks.
