Nope. As the commentators in FIFA say, if you do not buy a ticket, you do not win the raffle.

As soon as I got nominated here, I started thinking about my acceptance speech. But then I laughed at the conditionality of such a thing —how could you sincerely thank people at an occasion that might not come? This is like writing a letter telling your future spouse whom you haven’t met that you sincerely love them.

I love Stephen Fry. I love him when he presents the BAFTAs. But I always wondered where would all the acceptance speeches of those nominees who didn’t win end up going. I really couldn’t say but John Self in Money says that there certainly are more suicide notes in the world than people killing themselves.

Going back to Fry, I think it was in his aptly entitled autobiography (More Fool Me) that he talked about the trouble with being a known person when going to random pubs. That people charmingly drag you to the bar and buy you a pint (sometimes against your will). Once they’ve done that, you couldn’t turn around and say “cheers but you’ll have to excuse me now, I need to return to my own mates”. This is because you as a person have become functionally theirs at least for the duration of drinking the pint. I personally do not know if this award* in some way means the same (i.e. I now need to stick around till the title is handed to another person) but it’s awfully nice of you and so forth.

As I said, awfully nice of you and so forth. But I think I might’ve won by breaching the pre-election 'Purdah' rule and thus, not to be given a pint of the Dutch beer. Rather, I ought to be defenestrated with utmost possible speed. Purdah is believed to be Persian for ‘veil’ which, at the moment, brings to my highly disorganised mind the curious case of Lutfur Rahman (incidentally, his Christian, no, I mean, his first name is “لطف” and thus, the ‘r’ is inescapably intrusive – the one you hear British people inserting intravocalically when they say stuff like “ I sawr it”, “President Obamar is” or “Indiar and …” etc) and how he got quickly dethroned after having exerted in his campaign activities so-called “spiritual coercion” on fellow Muslims in Tower Hamlets and its mosques, that it was their Islamic duty to vote for him.

I can't really see beyond Whabbist and lua.

One makes me wish I knew a little Arabic, because I feel I am missing out on some of his finer, more drunkedest moments. But I see enough to cower in amazement nonetheless. The other, I mustn't allow myself to comment on because she is becoming immune to my compliments, and I must now store them away in order for them to revive into the force they once were.

(sorry asbie and Inc: you weren't far behind for me)

Edit: just remembered Quod also :(
