What does 'Houri' literally translate as, does anyone know? Is it 'virgin' or (as I am being assured by my sister) 'a person with no baggage'?? Sounds crap to me - not all that enticing either, if you be good, you'll be rewarded with 72 black eyed baggageless people! She also says this amazing prize is open for both men and women, is that correct? What an offer! Where do I sign  Cry

She's right - it means a beautiful virgin from paradise.

The nearest place to sign is at the Pink Flamingo at 2am in Milton Keynes - however one essential prerequisite is signing whilst wearing your beer glasses.  Oh, and I nearly forgot -  they might not be virgins...

i forget, i was asking about what hawwari meant (as in jesus's disciples are described as "hawwariyoon"), and the brother told me it was related to houri, but i can't remember what the root meant.

    where's my dictionary..

Both men and women? I haven't seen any quotes in the Quran indicating women will get anything of the sort :S Only seen quotes for men. Also why would a women want a virgin man anyway, I prefer experienced men Tongue I'm sure most men would prefer sluts who know what they are doing too Tongue

Can anyone point me to a quote about what women will receive? All I have seen so far is they are reunited with their family.

I'm trying to find a lewd quote I read about 'big black cocks spouting candy kauthar'... can't find it.

Realistically, I've heard that the muslim women in paradise will be more beautiful than the houris, and their husbands will want to spend more time with them... and single ladies will get married in jannah... and the space left open with "You cannot comprehend the joys of jannah"

Your right women recieve fuck all sex wise whilst men get 70 hot babes to bang forever. I think Arabs at the time (and today) had an obsession with virgins not becuase the sex was any better but because they'd prefer that which hadn't been touched by others, i.e. they saw women as objects to possess rather then people.

Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.

I once heard an Imaam saying that the houri referred to in scripture that men will get are 'white raisins'

Apparently you can derive this meaning from the root of the word.

So when the prophet promised houris in heaven for those martyred in battle to protect Islam and his soldiers went out to fight they must have really longed for raisins.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

I've heard it was white grapes but that translation comes from the Syro-Aramaic reading of the Quran, which is not the language the Quran was written in. However it does make some interesting translation changes such as the verse telling women to cover themselves in the original translates differently commanding women to "snap their belts around their waists" Tongue

There is a wiki article on this-

Quote from: Muhammad Asad on Surah 56:22 footnote 8,
"The noun hur - rendered by me as 'companions pure' -  is a plural of both ahwar (masc) and hawra (fem), either of which describes 'a person distinguished by hawar, which latter term primarily denotes 'intense whiteness of the eyeballs and lustrous black of the iris' (Qamus).

Quote from: Yusuf Ali on Surah XLIV:54 footnote 4729,
Hur implies the following ideas: (1) purity; possibly the word Hawwariyun as applied to the first Disciples of Jesus is connected with this root; (2) beauty, especially of eyes where the intense white of the eye-balls stands out against the intense black of the pupil, thus giving the appearance of lustre, and intense feeling, as opposed to dullness or want of expression; and (3) truth and goodwill.

Quote from: Amina Wadud in Qur'an and Woman: Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman's Perspective, Oxford University Press, 1999, pp. 54-55
It is clear that the term huri, used in the (idhafah) construction hur-al-'ayn, meant something specific to the Jahili Arab. She was 'so called by the Arabs of the desert because of her whiteness or fairness or cleanness'. She was a woman of 'clear complexion and skin'.[41] The description given of the huri are specific and sensual - youthful virgin females with large dark eyes, white skin, and a pliant character - 'while nowhere?are found similar descriptions detailing, if not the beauty, at least the modest or even perhaps hidden assets of earthly wives'.[42]

The specific depiction here of the companions of Paradise demonstrates the Qur'an's familiarity with the dreams and desires of those Arabs. The Qur'an offers the huri as an incentive to aspire after truth. It is impossible to believe that the Qur'an intends white women with large eyes to represent a single universal description of beauty for all humankind. If we take these mythological depictions universally as the ideal female, a number of culturally specific limitations are forced on the divergent audiences of the Qur'an. The value of these particulars is extremely limited.

The Qur'an itself demonstrates the limitation of this particular description when the community of believers in Islam had increased in number and established itself at Madinah. After the Makkan period, the Qur'an never uses this term again to depict the companions in Paradise. After Madinah, it describes the companions of Paradise in generic terms, 'For those who keep from evil, with their Lord are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, and pure azwaj and contentment from Allah.' (3:15). Keeping in mind my arguments about the generic use of certain terms, 'believers' here are either male or female, especially as azwaj is used for both in the Qur'an.

Sounds like a very specific image of beauty.

Well if you like being able to see her bones through her skin because she is so transparent, than a houri is the one for you.

    Quote
    Volume 4, Book 54, Number 469: Bukhari

    Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "The first batch (of people) who will enter Paradise will be (glittering) like a full moon; and those who will enter next will be (glittering) like the brightest star. Their hearts will be as if the heart of a single man, for they will have no enmity amongst themselves, and everyone of them shall have two wives, each of whom will be so beautiful, pure and transparent that the marrow of the bones of their legs will be seen through the flesh. They will be glorifying Allah in the morning and evening, and will never fall ill, and they will neither blow their noses, nor spit. Their utensils will be of gold and silver, and their combs will be of gold, and the fuel used in their >s will be the aloes-wood, and their sweat will smell like musk."

Plus, bollocks on the whole "for men and women".  It's men only, married women get to be with their first hubbies, and share him with the see through bug eyed bleedin bimbos, doesn't matter what she wants in heaven.

I asked the imam, I said "what if I don't want to be with my first husband in heaven" and he told me that when I get to heaven the things that I want wouldn't matter anymore because I wouldn't want them.  I would feel no anger, resentment, jealousy, I would just feel bliss.  So basically I would be a bit part actor in a cheap harem porn, just saying my lines, with no conscious thought at all.

Well according to Imam Tirmizi a houri is defined as folows:

Tirmizi, volume two (p 35-40): A houri is a most beautiful young woman with a transparent body. The marrow of her bones is visible like the interior lines of pearls and rubies. She looks like red wine in a white glass. She is of white colour, and free from the routine physical disabilities of an ordinary woman such as menstruation, menopause, urinal and offal discharge, child bearing and the related pollution. A houri is a girl of tender age, having large breasts which are round (pointed), and not inclined to dangle. Houris dwell in palaces of splendid surroundings. The Prophet was asked :'Do we have sex in Paradise?' He answered: 'Yes, by him who holds my soul in his hand, and it will be done dahman, dahman (with vigour). And when it is finished she will return pure and virgin again.

Its a bit confusing though. He says she has 'a transparent body' then she looks like 'red wine', then he says 'She is white'. Quite confusing.

You can see through to her marrow. Sounds disgusting.

Of course ther no menstruation so nothing to impede the man.

A tender age with large pointed breasts quite enticing if that's your cup of tea.

They live in oppulent palaces, so we get a different scenery as we visit each one.

And sex with them is quite vigourous! And when its done they return to being pure virgins.

I can see how those who belived this did not mind fighting to the death.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik
