    Organ donation

I was reading about an article in the times about organs donated by British patients going to patients from overseas.

Got me thinking about many Muslims opinion about organ donated, that it's wrong for whatever reasons and they wouldn't do it.

Wanted to get the opinions of ex-Muslims about their thoughts on organ donation now. Would you consider donating now?

An Exploratory Study Examining the Influence of Religion on Attitudes Towards Organ Donation Among the Asian Population in Luton, UK

..."Currently the demand for transplant organs far outstrips the supply in the UK. This problem is even more severe for the Asian population who have been shown to be disproportionately greater represented on transplant waiting lists in some regions of the UK....

Only two of the 32 Muslim respondents had heard of the 'fatwa' passed by the Muslim Law Council in 1995.12 Clearly the publicity campaigns which highlighted the 'fatwa' had not utilised effective channels of communication for informing the Muslim population. The Muslim respondents in this survey was a group which relied particularly heavily on the religious prescriptives in their faith to direct their beliefs and behaviour towards organ donation."

I don`t think I would do it now. Maybe a kidney but I`d definitely be open to it after death.  Can you choose who gets your organ?

I've got a donor card which includes all my organs. Haven't signed up for live donation though.

I too have a donor card and would be prepared to donate my whole body for science or medicine.

Many years ago my father found my donor card and was very angry that i should consider donating my organs because it was not islamic...  we had a bit of an argument but i insisted that i would rather help someone after my life ends rather than letting my body rot.  He gave in in the end.

The study conducted by the scientists over who heard the fatwa is a little off reality. The muslim world does not stand and sit around fatwas. There is no central CNN Fatwa station that muslims get their fatwa from. In fact fatwas are mostly a defense mechanism to deal with the sensibilities of the West. When someone blows himself or performs FGM, immediately the blame is thrown on some bad fatwa by a not-so-good muslims, and immediately we are reminded that the fatwa is not binding.

The reality is far from the fatwas. In fact because the information dissemination in 3rd world country cultures is so poor, it is hard to pass around even a real good fatwa.

Organ donation in islamic society is culturally deemed unislamic. When imams and ulama are on TV, the discussion is always centering around whether the body of a kaffir is a najis, or is it a rajis? And then would you want the organ of someone else in you on the day of judgement? would you want your organ into someone else on the day of judgement? whether if the organ you took was from a pork eater. Whether you would catch HIV from a foreign organ. Not just there is a shortage of organs, there is a severe shortage of blood as well.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"

So if your child is dying and needs blood would you say I can't accept that blood because it may contain nutrients from the bacon the donor ate.

Reminds me of the cases with Jehovah Witnesses who let their children die rather than accepting blood transfusions, because the bible says you shouldn't eat blood.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

I do not believe most people think that far ahead in a closed society. One day they will be in a hospital and will have to make a life decision about a son. They will not care about or even consider pork, but they will shocked at how come everyone else around them is still talking about pork rhetoric.

Also like all other deeply religious people, they believe that god will not leave someone to die in a hospital without support, unless of course it was their time to go.

I carry an organ donor card too but wouldnt donate my body for research. I know that's completely irrational considering that I wont be aware of what's happening to my body (hence the definition of the word 'dead') but I dont like the thought of medical students treating it disrespectfully.

Absolutely! People bury their heads in the sands - 'Allah Kareem' - God is merciful! Only, he's not, and shit happens, but they dont want to prepare for it because they'd rather not face it and just continue to put their trust in God, like children. And in doctors, as if they can do anything without the resources.

Life is a sexually transmitted disease which is invariably fatal.

Yeah, I have donor card for all my organs after my death.  I want to register for bone-marrow donation. I have always been underweight for blood donation.

I asked 2 Hindu scholars regarding organ donation Wink. The answers were obviously diverse. One said 'Your soul may get trapped because of attachment to that donated organ and that can obstruct your next life' Cheesy
Other said, 'This body is like a clothe. We discard old clothes, if someone can use it why not? '

**** with religious opinions. Organ donation can offer a better life to someone, so I am all up for it.  Afro

    Have you done it yet?

You can sign up to the Anthony Nolan trust. They send you a pack and all you have to do is go somewhere like your doctors or an Out patients Dept and get them to take a sample of your blood and that it.

Thanks a lot for your link.  That was useful, I will do it.

I am sitting over fence. Neither a Hindu, nor an Ex. Well, I am some kind of theist at the moment. I hate caste system, patriarchical society rules. Low catses and women have undergone a lot under Hinduism. I don't believe in incarnations etc. However, I like few classical Hindu philosophical bits.

They need more asians to sign up

"If you are white and need a bone marrow transplant, you have a 75% chance of finding a matching donor in the UK. If you are Asian, as Dean is, then you have just a 25% chance of finding a donor with the right tissue type"

..."Farah also believes that some Asian families lack selflessness and are too wrapped up in their own family life to come forward to join the register and help other people."..

Yeah, Asians need to develop a great amount of awareness about organ transplant. However, I don't think asians are particularly more selfish than any other ppl.

Me neither, I don't think it's about selfishness either, it's just not the norm enough to have the awareness for it.  There is no organ card carrying back home, so why do it here?

Second generation is aware, and some of them carry cards, but just not enough of them yet.

A few more generations and I'll bet it's changed and more of them than ever are comfirmed donor card carriers.

I had a card, lost it, had another card, lost it lol I;m always losing my actual card, but I'm fine with organ donations, they can burn whats left of me once they have what they need.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

Do your family know of your wishes? I understand when you die your body belongs to your next of kin and they can refuse. Although a quick google search shows there is conflicting information on the matter. Maybe the law has changed.

The article is a few years old. It's about Families 'hamper organ donation'
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4762923.stm

....."The refusal rates for families of potential donors from ethnic minorities was 70%, twice that for white potential donors (35%)"
