  • Obama - conspicuosly silent
     OP - January 05, 2009, 05:22 PM

Perhaps it's just me but I've been getting a strange feeling about Obama.

First he employs practically every political rival he had in the democratic party, I think in order to set up fall guys should something go wrong and now with the Gaza thing total silence. I'm guessing he's hoping it will all go away by the time he's inaugurated.

I've also heard in the press, right-wing mind, that he doesn't know what it means to lead.

I did have my doubts about him with regards to knowing himself based on his choice of mentors.

Anyway I'd be interested what other members think.

Its too early to tell whether Obama is capable of leadership.  His silence on this issue isn't anything surprising, IMO.  I think in his shoes, I would also STFU because whatever he says he will be accused of taking sides and will then come to office needlessly tainted in the eyes of either the Arabs or the Israelis or both.

Better that he keeps schtum and takes over with a clean sheet on the 20th, that way he might have a better chance of being able to sponsor a peace process.

But he hasn't kept silent on other issues, like the economy or even Mumbai seige. But during a visit to Israel last year he did say something like, if someone was sending rockets over to his house endangering his children he would do whatever was in his power to stop them.

But it is a delicate issue with passions raging on both sides. So I agree he should defer comment until he is president and privy to all the intelligence and strategy of his entire team.

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

Those issues aren't as divisive as the Middle East though.  He's better off keeping silent until he's actually in a position to do something, that way Hamas can't associate him with the Bush policies, and Israel can't get all paranoid about him.

I agree. Last summer he said:

?If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I?m going to do everything in my power to stop that, and I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.?

He hasn't keep quiet on certain issues, yes, but let's look at what those issues are:

The economy here is worrying a lot of people and Obama wants to push through a nearly trillion dollar spending plan. He's using the fear to push this agenda. The media keeps fostering this fear with talk of another Great Depression. He suffers nothing by trying to gain momentum for his "fix" for the economy.

The Mumbai siege. Pretty safe thing to talk about. After all, who in their right mind is thinking that Obama has to sit on the fence on this one? Seems a no-brainer to condemn such a barbaric act of terrorism.

As for the conflict in Gaza, he'd be dumb to wade into that swamp before he has to. He's right to sit back and say "we only have one president at a time in the US". Especially given that it's a foreign policy issue that's been a thorn in the side of several presidents now.

Trust me, the time is coming for his hair to turn gray and for him to find out just how difficult these situations are to deal with.
