     OP - January 07, 2009, 04:26 PM

I read a lot of Indian papers online. I'm shocked at how many rape cases are reported. And in particular the rape of young girls.

    Saw this article today

Six-year-old girl raped in Punjab town

Mohali (Punjab), Jan 7 (IANS) Luring her with a chocolate, an unidentified man raped a six-year-old girl in the industrial area here, police officials said Wednesday. The crime came to light when the parents of the girl saw her blood stained clothes. The father of the girl, who works as a watchman with an industrial unit, told the police that their daughter had gone missing around mid-day Tuesday.

The parents searched for her for some time but were satisfied when she came back in the evening. They realized only Wednesday morning that she had been sexually assaulted. On being questioned, the girl told her parents that someone had given her a chocolate to take her away.

The victim?s parents took her to the civil hospital here where doctors confirmed that she had been raped. She has been admitted to a hospital, 12 km from Chandigarh for treatment.

The police have registered a case of rape against an unidentified man. Police officials said that an identification parade of some people living nearby would be carried out to nab the culprit.

That's disgusting. To be honest it's not much different from the rest of the world. Rape rates are quite high every where. I wonder what the real rape rates are in different countries.

Rape of Dalits are extremely common.

...."The prevalence of rape in villages contributes to the greater incidence of child marriage in those areas. Early marriage between the ages of ten years and sixteen years persists in large part because of Dalit girls? vulnerability to sexual assault by upper-caste men; once a girl is raped, she becomes unmarriageable. An early marriage also gives parents greater control over the caste into which their children are married.

Dalit women are also raped as a form of retaliation. Women of scheduled castes and scheduled tribes are raped as part of an effort by upper-caste leaders to suppress movements to demand payment of minimum wages, to settle sharecropping disputes, or to reclaim lost land. They are raped by members of the upper caste, by landlords, and by the police in pursuit of their male relatives.

Dalit women face the triple burden of caste, class, and gender. Dalit girls have been forced to become prostitutes for upper-caste patrons and village priests. Sexual abuse and other forms of violence against women are used by landlords and the police to inflict political "lessons" and crush dissent within the community."....

It's religion, culture and the pursuit of power that makes people do these things. Woman in, any, religion don't stand a chance (in regards to Dalit women and Hinduism).

It is great that they are reporting the incidents. For years we knew about it and no one ever talked about it. Now at least there might be some pressure to reform.

I thought this was real bad rape rates for a country until I did some research.

According NationMaster.com the per capita rape statistcs by country is quite horrendous. I've highlighted India as that's the country under discussion so an idea where it falls wrt to other countries can be seen. Note Pakistan is not on the list. Saudi Arabia is at the bottom with the least number of rapes per capita.

Women in India and Bangladesh (can't speak for pakistan) are unwilling to report rapes because in most cases it will mean that they will remain unmarried. And in many cases the perpetrators will never be caught so what's the point of reporting them?

There is a documentary called "born into brothels". In it an American woman wanted to place the children into school which she wanted to pay for. Most schools refused because the children's mothers were know prostitutes or they lived in the red light district. This is the mindset of these people.

So can you imagine to courage it takes to say "I've Been Raped"? In most cases the women will remain single and have to live with the stigma of rape.

Albeit maybe I should have titled the thread rapes.

Yes I figured as much that in these countries rape would not be reported because of the stigma.

Sad article there in the independent. Just off to bed hope I can sleep!

It's changing, slowly but changing. It's seems people are less likely to tolerate it in their community. As more stories come out there is more public outrage and greater pressure on the police to do something about it.
