  • The Outreach Project
     OP - February 12, 2009, 05:42 PM

I've noticed that most of the members here share very similar views with each other... about FFI and the Muslim world, etc. I'm pleasantly surprised! We all wish Muslims well and don't mean them any harm. In fact, I'm sure most of us would love to see their lives improve; our friends and family become more prosperous and perhaps do away with certain negative elements in their perspective that see "anti-muslim conspiracies amongst jews, hindus and the so-called west".

    So...

I'm thinking of creating an online project, where apostates reach out to the liberal Muslim community. Basically like a massive blogging/network project, where we combine our online presence in to a unified and extremely visible symbol... a conglomerate of apostates who wish to establish positive relations with the Muslim world and bring about a mutually beneficial social relationship with them.

    The goals:

1- Gain popular acceptance of our "person" as part of the Muslim ummah, with tolerance for our dissent.
2- Distancing ourselves from intolerant apostates, thereby fixing our reputation amongst the Muslim ummah.
3- Establish a collective effort to create greater tolerance for everyone's human rights, such as right to way of life (for Muslims and non-Muslims) and political and social dissent.

    Method:

We create a new blog, where we all contribute and link to it with our present blogs. This creates a link network that "ups" us in search engine rankings. We also regularly post - at least once a day, distributed over as many people as possible...

And we bring in liberal Muslim bloggers and skeptics, to start discussions and debates.

We can also work with Muslim blogs to have our links put up there and vice versa.

I've done this sort of thing before. The Towelian website for example, got about 700 hits per day when it was shut down. I know how to get traffic... but I don't have the time to single handedly do this alone. Some of the TRASHers will help, but there aren't enough active ones of those yet...

Please reply if you're interested in taking an *active* part in this project. Here's how you can be a part of this:

1- you're ready to write original and interesting posts 2  or 3 times a week.
2- you have extensive knowledge of digg, mixx, propeller, stumbleUpon, and/or other traffic-accumulating websites.
3- you're well connected in the blogosphere.

or in some other way you can think of.

SO... are you up for it?

are atheists and non-muslims invited ?

I was not blessed with the ability to have blind faith. I cant beleive something just because someone says its true.

of course! most apostates tend to be atheists too...

and you don't even have to be an apostate, really, to participate. what matters are the goals i listed above. i assumed those goals would be an interest of apostates and courageous liberal muslims alone, but hey, anyone who picks up those goals is more than welcome! Smiley

I am happy to consider a variation of this outreach project, provided it gets support from the COEM members, and it done as part of this forum.

We can't keep going off splitting in different directions, otherwise in 5-10 years we will be come a large but disparate group, with little influence.

As far as I am concerned this is the home of the decent apostates, and herein I shall remain until proven otherwise.

I don't think the Outreach Project is competitive with this forum.

In fact it's a vertically different medium: blogging relies on traffic, readership and influence. Forums rely on active participation of interested parties. Blogs can reach a wider audience because people don't have to invest a lot of time and effort in voicing their concerns or even in merely perusing through "what's hot" on whatever topic they're interested in.

I don't mean to pull people away from this forum at all... in fact i didn't even think that dynamic exists.

The Outreach Project's goals are pretty clear in what it wants to achieve: it's not merely a gathering of apostates... it's a mechanism for integration in to the muslim strata... it's supposed to provoke discussions within the reader's real life personal social circles... as opposed to this forum which provokes discussion right here.

the objectives are totally different... again, the medium is completely different. i'm not looking to create "another gathering" of "decent apostates". i already am part of one: the T.R.A.S.Hers and now here.

Yes, but why would you want to use a different URL?  We need to increase the hits to this URL so it moves its way up the google rankings and gets recognised one day.

The moment you move away from here, unless you have funding, you could run the risk of it drying up very quickly.

Also you would gain benefits by attaching any such projects to this site, as well as assistance from its members - its a valuable resource and the reason you posted that here.

forums don't move up in a search engine's rankings. that's not how search engines work. i don't see why you think this forum would "dry up" if a combined apostate blog was made... are you implying people would be too busy to post here if they were blogging?

that's the only possibility i see... but i don't think that's likely, considering not everyone will suddenly rush to help in that blog... nor will those who do so, be completely and utterly devoted to it to the degree that they stop posting here.

furthermore, you won't be getting more readership to a forum: the very structure of forums is too complicated for a massively large audience... the blogging architecture of communicating information is quick... and  therefore the kind of market that views blogs is totally different from the kind that prefers more engaging activities like posting on forums.

yes of course there are a few people who do both, but we're talking about the market overall.

    so to sum up:

1- it's a different readership, the kind a forum will never get, no matter what.
2- this forum won't dry up because this is a place for ex-muslims to gather, the blog will be a place to communicate to the other world... so not everyone here will go there... and those that do, won't be too busy.

I know you love this forum and everything... which is great. it's got good people in it.

and i don't mind making this the "official forum" to have IN-DEPTH discussions with readers of the blog who wish to do so... it doesn't take anything away from the Outreach Project (OP), and i suppose that'll get this forum a few more people.

BUT what can't happen is the marketing of a forum, in the blogosphere - that just won't work.

This is a great idea, every now and then a very nice and informative post is made here and sticking it on blog would be a great idea for that reach around program.

Sounds like a plan. I can see the merit of your points, and a bit of cross-linking with original content is not going to hurt anyone's search rankings. In fact realistically it's the only way to increase your ranking.
