I recommend the book "Lucifer, The Devil in the Middle Ages" by Jeffrey Burton Russell. It explains the evolution of demonology and Christian theology concerning the Devil. In general terms, the book elucidates why and how the myth of Satan was created and sustained, and for which reasons. There is also a short chapter about the Islamic understanding of Satan.
