  • Ex-Muslims, question about the fun stuff related to being an apostate
     OP - March 22, 2009, 05:52 PM

I've read plenty of testimonials of people leaving Islam online, and while they are interesting on an intellectual level, I've seen few of the more salacious details of the joys of being freed from a puritanical religion like Islam (or fundamentalist Christianity). I'm particularly interested in "first times".

So here's your chance to tell about the deliciousness of your first pulled-pork sandwich, the hazy joy of your first night pounding shots of whiskey with friends (and the pain of the next morning), the fun of your first three-way, the embarrassment of having to purchase your first medicated shampoo for crabs at the pharmacist...anything goes!

Or, in the reverse, are your practices, habits and activity in these sorts of areas pretty similar to what they were before you officially left Islam?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

A good friend of mine from high school was a strict Mormon, then he moved out to LA and within a year he was an atheist, and smoking, drinking, doing drugs and decided he was bi-sexual. I was so pissed off he didn't have his first smoke and drink with me Smiley

    fuck you

A lot of people ask me the same question you asked. "How's you're life now that you're an ex-Muslim?" "Do you drink, have sex, do drugs like a madman?"

And my answer usually is "Hell Yeah"

Well, maybe not like a madman, but I do occasionally have a beer here and there. I'm not a big drinker. In fact, I avoid alcohol as much as I can, because I weight train. And as far as sex goes, I have a steady girlfriend for that. The only drug I have ever done was marijuna during highschool- and that was before I left Islam.

I don't eat pork either. I hate the smell and the taste. No matter how greasy and well cooked the bacon is.

So my life really hasn't changed that much. I try to live an exciting life, but I don't think exciting always equates to indulging in alcohol, and drugs 24/7. There are other things to do.

It all depends on when you drink. If you are both serious about your weight-training and serious about your partying, it can be done. Of course, it involves disciplined planning and strict scheduling, and, well...that's no fun.

Not having to hold my farts in anymore is very liberating.  yes

For those of you who don't know what I'm talking to, allow me to explain:

A Muslim has to wash themselves ritually (do the wudu) before they pray or before they touch the Quran.  If you fart, or go to the toilet, or fall asleep, then you have to do the ritual washing all over again if you want to continue praying.

When I used to pray regularly, I did my wudu (ritual wash) after I came home from school to pray Asar, and I tried to hold in all my farts until I prayed the Magrib and Isha prayers too.

The need to fart mid-prayer is extremely annoying, especially in congregational prayer!

I've held in many many farts in my time... but no more!  Smiley

If anyone can find the ahadith surrouding this issue then I'd be every so greatful.

You don't have to be a non-Muslim or ex-Muslim to indulge in all of that... Cool

Haha I like the idea of this thread, I see the potential for laughs dance

I'm not really a partier, and as an ex-convert don't have any real "firsts", but things that I really appreciate now are simple: like the freedom to play with my hair when I'm bored in class, wear clothes that make me feel like a real woman instead of a tent... listening to music is a big one too.

First time I went swimming and first time I went dancing after apostating were also really liberating. I felt so uneasy at first, but soon got carried away and was angry with myself for ever thinking it was wrong. Let the good times continue  bunny

Swimming in a mixed pool is still a bit novel for me and I still can't eat much pork.  I had a bacon barm awhile ago and it made my stomach pretty upset but I managed  to hold it down.

As an apostate convert everything else is pretty much like before converting but I was never a big partier to begin with.

Does anybody still have any muslim habits?

I still say "alhamdulillah" occasionally when I sneeze! And I still can't eat pork, probably because it was drilled into me as a child how pigs are disgusting animals and how abhorrent pork is!

    your first pulled-pork sandwich

Have you mistaken pork for a type of alcohol??!

I do the sort of stuff I used to do - live a good and moral life, have the occasional drink. The only difference is that I haven't had sex since turning apostate Cry and I want that guilt-free feeling (previous encounters have proved... burdensome), and I can now eat meat I previously considered haram. I don't like pork as it tastes too rubbery to me, and bacon is too strong and icky. I've not tried ham yet, but I do like a good, juicy steak.

I hate bacon. The only time I eat pork is in pepperoni or sausages. Maybe its by habit, but one less meat in my diet is a good thing in the end. The only difference now is that I dont feel like I have to hold back no matter who I'm with.

Same with alcohol. I always drank, but as my confidence as a non-muslim grows I am more open about it.

I always avoided prayer to begin with, but now I dont need to hide so much.

It's been so long since I gave up my muslim worries, its hard to remember, but I do recall being paranoid about every other thing as a child, due to constant lectures from my mother. I feel much more confident and at ease with myself now Smiley

    Fart On Shahid Raza!

To the rest of ya-- thanks for your stories. No drunken, coke-fueled orgies yet, but interesting stuff all the same.

But stop hatin on the pork! Damn, people, you are missing out on the best thing about not following Muslim/Jewish dietary laws!

Bacon's great, and yeah sausage and pepperoni are good too, but there's so much more to pork than bacon and your standard ham:

--So many hams...Virginia baked, Smithfield, country ham, capicolla, proscuitto, etc.

--Pulled-pork sandwich with sweet-tangy BBQ sauce

--Minced-pork sandwich with tangy, vinegar-ketchup-mustard Carolina-style sauce smashed on a buttered bun with coleslaw...mmmmm

--Baby-back ribs. Nice dry rub of seasoned salt and brown sugar. Slow-smoked or braised till the meat's nearly fallin off the bone. Then finished off on the grill and brushed with a sweet-tangy BBQ sauce.

--Grilled pork chops with latkes, apples sauce and sour cream

--Center-cut pork chops lightly sauteed with shallots and scallions, then braised in a white wine cream sauce, served over garlic-mashed potatoes with a side of asparagus. Damn, I'm getting hungry.

I've drunk some alcohol, but I'm not very keen on the taste and never was.  I've eaten pork a few times.  I'm married, so no wild and crazy sex other than the wild and crazy sex I was already having.  I say fuck and shite a lot.  I never did this when I was a proper sister.  My life hasn't changed that much.  I'm sorry it's not very sensational.  Nothing much exciting in wearing jeans and a top but without a scarf.  I do have some knee length skirts that I wear.  I don't feel so much like 'wowee' as I just feel very comfortable, a feeling I never had being around in hijaab.

I didn't have very much guilt to let go of because I left Islam over a long period of time, and stopped practising it or taking it seriously a long time ago.  It was more realising that I didn't believe in the stuff they teach and I thought that the rituals were pointless. I believed this almost my whole adult life, I just had to realise that it was so.

For me, the true joy, the true wildness is of the mind.  I am happier than I  have ever been before.  I feel like the future is wide open, even though my life has been decimated financially and otherwise both by my Islamic lifestyle and then by my choice to quit Islam and the realisation of my atheism.   I never had this sort of open view of life when I was Muslim and when I believed in the hereafter. This is optimism that I have never experienced before.  Praise be to me!

I gave up Halal meat years ago because I lived in a completely non muslim area in a completely non muslim town in a completely non muslim county!

Anyway, love pepparoni, some sausages, a bit of ham, bacon's ai'ght.

Don't like alcohol much, will drink some at times but don't like being pissed.

    Not gonna talk about sex.

I don't retain any Muslim habits like obsessivly eating and drinking with the right hand because I gave them up as a Muslim.

That's about it, for me it wasn't converting for fun/because I was restricted, it was more of a spiritual awakening because I already lived a fairly liberal life.

I guess that's the difference in becoming an atheist having come from a very strict, conservative religious background, and becoming an atheist from a more moderate religious background. With many, if not most, Muslims (excluding perhaps Bosnians and others from a more moderate Muslim tradition-- most of the Bosnians I know are pretty laid-back about that stuff), it's more of an "all-or-nothing" type of thing. With many/most Christians in the Northeastern U.S. at least, a lot of the stuff outside of the religion (premarital sex, questioning doctrine, etc.) is pretty well tolerated in practice even if officially condemned. With the Catholic church, divorce is the only practically problematic part (abortion would be, but you don't have to tell anyone about that). Of course, homosexuality is still a big problem with a lot of Christian churches in the US, and down South some of the churches are only a few steps away from the most radical of Muslims on that issue, along with some other issues. But outside of a very few of the most radical and unorthodox Christian churches (like say some radical Mormon splinters), the status of women in modern American Christianity tends to be better than in many Muslim communities (of course, these are not hard and fast rules, I'm just speaking generally).

I never found being an atheist terribly liberating. Of course, when all your family or community expects of you is that you will, at best, try to show up to church on Sundays, and, more realistically in my own family, show up for Christmas, Easter, weddings and funerals, then you're not going to feel too "oppressed" to begin with. Of course, had I been raised in a strict Southern Baptist family I might feel differently. A lot of the real fundamentalists Christians down South hate on the Muslims, but other than the Jesus as Christ/Trinity and pork thing, are a lot closer to Muslim fundamentalists than they'd ever admit.

Afro Good job, anyhow. Better luck with the sex part next time. The Q-Man is still proud of you.

    @ The Bacon-Haters

I just realized maybe the anti-bacon stuff is due to the kind of bacon? When I visited the UK (about 13-14 years ago), the most common type of bacon was back bacon. While I like back bacon okay, pork belly bacon (the most common kind in the US) is much better IMO. Not sure if back bacon is still the most popular over there or not. As to the sausages commonly found in the British Isles, I wouldn't blame anyone for not liking those-- they're crap. Italian, Polish and American sausage is much better stuff.

For bacon, never eat the whole slice, it is horrendous. The idea is to take a very little strip, chop it into tiny little bits, and throw them in for the smoked flavor. Works very well in pasta.

Am I the last virgin on CEMB? Guess so.Actually my parents inspite of an inter faith marriage are pretty conservative, I think I'll get into serious trouble if I have sex & they find out. sad

Lol I think you're bit young to be worrying about sex Tongue It's easy to hide if you've living away from home and are careful.

It's okay, you're young still. Just eat some pork instead. A well-made pulled-pork sandwich is almost just as satisfying! Smiley Of course, it's pretty unlikely you can find a good one outside of the US. Even in the Northeast US it's a stretch-- I've only found one good BBQ joint North of Baltimore.

But you're in India, right? Have your parents take you on vacation to Vietnam-- not too far, at least it's a lot closer than North Carolina. They make their own version of pork BBQ that is every bit as good as the Southern American version.

Yes everyone, I'm making the hard sell on pork here.

    fuck you

Mom's Muslim, she doesn't like me eating pork, & I respect her beliefs, although she won't prohibit me to eat pork, it makes me happy to do so. Smiley

That is the most intelligent thing I have heard in a long time.

Knock your head on the ground, don't be miserly in your prayers, listen to your Sidi Sheikh, Allahu Akbar! - Lounes Matoub
