    Please let me know what sect did you belong to, when you were Muslims.

    Dunno, we called ourselves Muslims.  However later on I remember my dad once saying we were wahabbis, then changed to deobandis - whichever one it was, we was anti-peer.  (however you spell it, but those people who were supposed to be able to possess special powers)

    Does anyone know if there is an easy way of defining it?

    I peronally didn't identify myself as being a part of any sect... but as far as I know we were sunni Muslim.

    Apart from Sunni and Shia, there aren't really any distinct sects in Islam. I don't know about Shias but amongst Sunnis, it would be more accurate to call them schools of thought than sects. Like most people of a South Asian heritage, I was of the Hanafi madhab,  but towards the end, I would have just said I was Muslim.

    Did your dad say that you were Wahabbis after you became Deobandis, because Wahabbi is generally used as a derogatory term. People who would be called Wahabbis generally tend to refer to themselves as Muwahiddun or Salafis.

    And if you were anti-peer, you were Deobandi as opposed to Barehlvi. This post has reminded me of the endless Deobandi/Barehlvi debates that I used to love so dearly (until I realised they were futile)!

     BMZ - I'm perturbed by your signature . From that quote , I'd say Sina has leapt headfirst into a dune . I really object to this suggestion that those of us who don't buy into some fairy tale version of reality are somehow morally inferior .
      I've always lived by a certain code of ethics , if anything I consider myself more 'moral' than all the holy willies because I've thought about what is wrong and right , not just followed some book or preacher .

    Thank you for the comment, aife. Forget about Ali Sina. The man is a pathological liar and a megalomaniac. I will change my signature to have something better than this from Ali Sina.

    From your answer, I conclude you are not an ex-Muslim. Right?

    He is quite "open" only on his forum. That is the only place he can be seen, aife.  Cheesy

    No one has seen him. He does not show himself for 'safety' reasons. Ladies like Maryam Namazie, Ayaan Hirisi Ali,
    Noni Darwaish, Wafa Sultan, Taslima Nasreen and others are out in the open. You can see them in public, video clips, etc.

    But no one has even see a pic or a caricature of Ali Sina. Once he wrote, "The God of Islam is a narcissist" and I had asked him, "Ali, Is the God of the Bible also a narcissist?" Ali Sina replied, "The God of the Jews is also a narcissist." and spared Jesus
    and his fellow evangelists.  Cheesy

     I've been to Faith Freedom , mainly out of curiosity after seeing it mentioned here so much . I haven't read that many of his posts , a couple seemed sensible but he seems to be a bit obsessed with some bizarre conspiracy theory about Obama . You can't really blame him for being careful about his personal safety though , can you ? People have died over this stuff after all .

    As far as I know, my family was Sunni. But, my father hardly lived by the hardcore Sunni lifestyle. He has very moderate views.

    Yes, he is obsessed with Obama.

    I think personal safety is not an issue. There is no Fatwa against the dubious character. It is just an excuse. The bastard lives in Canada, where he is safe.

    Hassan, a poster here and an ex-Muslim lives in London, can be seen on youtube and takes part in demonstrations, etc.
    No harm has come to him in London, where thousands of Muslims live.

     I have enormous respect for apostates who speak out publicly . I'm from a christian background so I don't have to face the same issues , that's part of the reason I would never criticise people like sina for guarding their privacy .
      - and I expect Theo van Gogh thought he was quite safe cycling round nice , tolerant , Amsterdam . Shouldn't think Hampstead liberal Salman Rushdie ever thought , all those years ago when he handed in his manuscript , that he'd have to spend the next decade as a virtual prisoner

    I think my dad liked the wahabbi "no-nonsense" approach, but may have later realised it was a little too harsh and referred to himself as deobandi.  I remember once asking him, and he looked back in as much confusion with which the question was asked.

    You may not have done, but I am sure the mosque you chose certainly did and that is how most people were defined e.g. were there peers in your mosque and did you believe in them?

    A Salafi is one who seeks to understand Islam, the Qur'an, and follow Muhammad upon the understanding of the Salaf as-Saali7, the first three generations of Muslims who followed Muhammad.     'Pir' I think is the conventional English spelling; Farsi for 'Sheikh'.

    Often Wahhabi = Salafi.
    I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

    'Pir' I think is the conventional English spelling; Farsi for 'Sheikh'.

    Often Wahhabi = Salafi.


    A pir is not strictly a Sheikh, although they can loosely be called that. In Pakistan and India anyway, a Pir usually acts as an intermediary to god.

    That's not very ethical. You can't ask people a question and not tell them the reason until after everyone has answered!

    Why? Blind studies do it all the time. It prevents biased results.

    I was from a sunni family, married into a sunni family who were more leaning towards saudi's version of Islam.

    I didn't call myself under any sect. I think my family followed the main interpretation of Islam though (either shia or sunni, I cant remember which one is which).

    Where I was born and grew up there were no divisions by sects as far as we lay Muslims were concerned.

    As our ancestors were put on ships and shipped out to various British territories to work the cane fields after the abolition of slavery, as groups, Muslims and Hindus were pretty much isolated from there native lands and core culture.

    So I think most over time merge in one simple 'Muslim' umbrella. Though when the annually Hoosay (commemorating the martyrdom of Hussein ), as its called in the Caribbean some Muslims participated and some didn't. When I was younger I didn't know why.
