     OP - March 27, 2009, 06:48 AM

A Muslim  from Netherlands asks at Islamonline whether it is permissible to for Muslims to read romance novels. Umm, why is it even a question?

But what answer does the scholar give? He says that Muslims should only read about things which are beneficial, so his daughter is encouraged to read about the Islamic battles, & advices the reader to do the same so that her urge to read romance novels disappears.

    Here's the fatwa!

     Question and Answer Details

     Title
     Reading Romantic Novels

     Question
As-Salamu `Alaykum! Is it permitted to read romantic novels?

     Date

     Answer

Wa `alaykum As-Salamu wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.

In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.

All praise and thanks are due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger.

Dear sister in Islam, we are very pleased for the great confidence you repose in us and we really commend your apparent interest in having a better understanding of the teachings of Islam and the rulings of this great religion in all matters. In fact, Islam is a religion that encompasses all aspects of life and secures guidance and light for all mankind.

As for your question, a Muslim is best advised to engage in what is beneficial for him and to avoid what may waste his time or arouse his sexual desires.

Answering the question, Dr. `Abdul-Fattah `Ashoor, professor of Exegesis of the Qur'an, issues the following Fatwa:

"Reading books have many benefits. A Muslim should read that which is beneficial to him. It stands to reason that the Muslim should avoid reading romantic novels that only arouse sexual desires and ignite lust in him/her. This is due to the fact that reading such things will fill him/her with temptation and drive him/her away from remembering Almighty Allah.

Reading romantic novels may be dangerous in the same way as films are, as both may contain expressions about immoral people and immoral practices that are forbidden for a Muslim.

So, I advise my dear daughter to read the history of Prophets and to ponder over verses of the Glorious Qur?an as well as the biography of Prophets, something extensively dealt with in the Qur?an. I advise her also to read the history of Islamic battles, etc. Getting her mind engrossed with these noble readings, she will find herself in no need for reading such novels."

So reading romance novels is harmful & haram, but Islamic Battles are beneficial?  finmad

I knew this already because I wanted to be a writer but I was told that it was haram to write about stuff that was not real (an absolute must for fantasy writing) or was a distraction to a persons Deen.

My father also destroyed all my books once and made me read the quran everyday instead.

How boring life would have been if I had remained a muslim forever. vomit

If that is mostly what she is allowed to read, I can only imagine the damage done to his poor daughters brain.  Aarrggghh!

Its no surprise we are faced with these current problems borne by an unbalanced upbringing, and history will repeat itself as she grows up.

I really sympathise with that Berbs. My mom's parents were nothing like that, though. My aunt (mom's sister) has married a real fundie Muslim & he doesn't even allow his daughter to go to her friends' birthday parties, although his son has all the freedom in the world, & he's made his son Adil into a similar fanatic. His daughter Ayesha who's about my age, is sooo timid before him,she is a great dancer & learnt Bharatnatyam(a form of Indian dance) for many years, but my uncle recently stopped her all-girls dance class as(his words) dancing is haram, especially dance forms connected to paganism!finmad

Islamonline is meant to be a moderate website.

IOL was moderate but I have noticed a shift in their stance on many subjects lately as I pointed out in another thread.

As for reading books, I have seen some fatawa that even claim that reading anything non-Islamic is haram!  How awful considering that most books written by and for Muslims are so dry and pedantic and  many of them are poor translations from other languages.

    First point:

It is forbidden to write about stuff that isnt real?! Riiiight. If someone cant proof the existance of allah (wich they cant) dousnt fall the koran under this law?  grin12

    Second point:

Why is it that Sex is something dangerous in Islam? I watch porn all the time. I read Books with sexual content. And im still not a ravaging massmurder/childmolester/rapist (hope this is spelled right).

But well, evidence never mattered to faithies, why should they start now?

Actually i consider myself somewhat of a calm and relaxed person.

But cmon... Islam pictures men as barely in controle of themselfes. And only covering up the woman can prevent them from running wild and raping everything that dousnt run faster then a pig. (pun intended)

If something helps feminism its Islam. No other worldview makes men look so bad and primitive.

Yes, well, of course the Ikhwan Muslimeen are going to call themselves moderate, even if they are not. And they do such a good job at it that you have a lot of Muslims and even non Muslims thinking it is a moderate site run by a nice group of moderate, natural health and art loving Muslims.

Actually sex isn't at all dangerous in Islam, the only sex you can read about is Prophet Mo's sex. Ditto for:

massmurder- As long as it is the mass murder of Jews, idolaters or others who refused to accept Allah & Mohammed. Even this scholar encourages his daughter to read about jihad!  Wink

childmolester- You can read all about Mohamed & his 9 year old bride from Islamic sources.

rape- Read about Mohammed & Safiyyah, Mohammed & Rayhana & other women he "married" right after killing their husbands & fathers.

Methinks, its far more likely that a person can turn into a mass murderer, rapist, child molestor through reading the Quran! Roll Eyes

I was a budding writer in my youth...and when the long stretched out days of boredom over took me a few years into my marriage...I decided to start writing again as an outlet...

Hands down I was told writing fiction is haram...its the same as lying...and of course lying is haram. I was discouraged at every turn and my exhusband threw all my efforts away when he found them...I eventually stopped writing.

I have since picked it up again...I might have a best seller just writing about my muslim life...and theres noooo lying involved...lol.  Cheesy

I find it interesting that we are never encouraged to read about love...express love (no flowers can be given to hospital patients etc...fatwa on that as well)...and yet reading about violent battles etc is perfectly ok...dont get it...dont wanna get it.  Huh?

He got pissed and demanded  that I not write about him because for sure I would make him look bad...considering he turned out to be a pedophile...Im wondering what exactly he thought I should do to shine a better light on him  Huh?

The reasoning for that is eminently logical:  in Islam, there is a perennial war going on, it's a life or death matter -- not for life here in this world, but for Eternal Life that is the only thing that matters.

In this context, if Muslims divert their attention too much to the seductive aspects of this life in this world -- romance, music, entertainment, laughter, etc. -- they will drain the military energy and the focus and resolve needed to win this great Struggle against Satan and the Infidels in his thrall, this great War throughout the ages that God has through his Prophet enjoined upon them as the most privileged people on Earth to whom he has entrusted the Message of the Absolute Truth, in order to do their part in ushering in the Last Days and the final transformation of Creation into what it was meant to be from the beginning -- Paradise for Eternity.

Muslims here and there may resent this hold that Islam has over their brains and bowels, they may here and there try to steal a forbidden kiss, or a cup of wine or a smoke, or listen to music and actually let that music sweep their passions away (God forbid!) -- but as long as they do not cut the umbilical cord to the Umma, they are enabling my mortal enemy and so they too are my mortal enemy.  They have a choice to make.  By remaining in limbo, the "moderate" Muslims or the "Muslims-for-identification-purposes-only" are in fact aiding and abetting the Muslims who take their Islam all too seriously.

How can we tell the difference between harmless Muslims, and dangerous Muslims?
