Switzerland requires every male over the age of 20 to own an assault rifle. I guess Switzerland has to be one of the most violent countries in the world.  Roll Eyes

    No, but the US is.

Why was this law passed in Switzerland?  Its a good point that I was unaware of, however I presume the percentage of gun related incidents is much higher than that of the UK?

Also you make the assumption that I believe societal attitudes to violence is dependent on whether you own a gun or not, whereas I believe its caused by the environment - same reason UK is more prone to violence today.  IMO Switzerland is much better in this respect to the UK, so it would have less violence irresepective of whether gun ownership was legal or not.

    No, but the US is.

Actually Mexico has the most gun crimes in Noth america, this is dispite the fact that it has the strictest gun control laws on the continent.

Irrelevant. The point was that the US is violent and has high rates of gun related crimes.

Mexico is also considered a less developed country in comparison to Switzerland. Crime in Mexico and the factors influencing it are a lot deeper than just the gun laws.

I'm just saying that gun control has never make a society safer. In fact it usually has the opposite effect. I think the inability for a human being to defend his/her life, liberty and property with the best means possible is a vice, not a virtue.

And gun control will not solve this situation, considering that D.C and other high crime northern cities banned Guns and suffered an increase in gun crimes. As compare to the rest of US in which gun related crimes decreased.

You're just arguing from fear and machismo, in my opinion. Australia has tighter gun control than the US and is not more dangerous. So much for the opposite effect.

And would remain violent in the absence of guns.  It is simply part of our national character.  Read American history.

Here in Texas, we have something called a "castle" law.  I.e. defending one's home and family is a legal justification for using lethal force as a first move. You still have to prove that you were being attacked, though.

Anyway, someone in my neighborhood had to take advantage of that law when he shot dead a crew of home invaders (three of them).  When all the dust settled, it turned out that they had invaded the wrong home, not because they got shot dead, but because they were after the drug dealer two doors down.  THAT person hauled ass, leaving behind everything but his "merchandise".  He was caught a few weeks later.  There hasn't been a whole lot of "excitement" since.

    Afro  Good for him.

I don't like the idea of anyone taking away my ability to defend myself, my family, or my property. I own a Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun, and a lever action Winchester Model 94  in .30-30 caliber. Yet I don't go running around shooting people who look at me cross-eyed.

Nor do I like the idea of some scumbag being able to get black market firearms, while Joe Average can't even own a .22. Unfortunately, no matter what any government does they will never get rid of all firearms. Just the ones available to regular citizens, making them easy prey for criminals with guns.

And since I can't depend on the police to do their jobs correctly, I'll take things into my own hands if I have to.

I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I remain.

Well, I think people have been making some very good arguments for and against gun-control, here's my take:

America has a very violent culture and an unstable social structure, even if all guns are banned the incidents of violence will not decrease. HOWEVER, if all guns are banned, after a period of several years the body count will go down, as limiting the amount of guns legally in circulation will eventually have an effect on the black market as well, and although the number of violent incidents will not decrease, the weapons used will have less lethality and be less capable of killing a large number of people in a short amount of time. Also "collateral damage" will go down-- a lot of times some kid will get killed because he was playing in the street when some "pray and spray" asshole does a drive-by-- unless some guy is a knife-throwing expert you really don't have to worry about such things in a knife attack.

But I'm against gun control anyways and here's why:

    1. Self-defense is a natural right. Being armed is a natural extension of this right. Most gun control advocates in my country are essentially saying (a) you must rely solely on the government to defend you from an armed attacker and (b) it is in the government's sole discretion to determine who, when and how someone can defend themselves from an imminent threat.

This is not how we think of other rights, so I'm not prepared to subject our rights to excessive restrictions by the government simply because it will bring the body count down eventually. If we really value our rights, sometimes we have to accept that we, as a society, may be less secure or have more crime. Sure, abrogating our 2nd Amendment (gun) rights may lead to fewer murders, but giving up our 4th Amendment (right against unwarranted search and seizure) and 5th Amendment (right against self-incrimination and to a lawyer), 8th Amendment (right against excessive bail) and 14th Amendment (guarantee of due process) rights would also lead to less crime, but I'm not willing to give up a single one of those rights just to bring crime, event violent crime, down. Sometimes you have to make a choice between safety and freedom, and I'll choose freedom every time.

    2. I like my guns. They are way cool and fun.

OMG I was thinking about this the other day and trying to plan a way to find some guns in the UK should such a situation ever arrive.  Cheesy

I hate not being able to own a weapon when a time could come when I will desperately need it.  The stability of a country isn't set in friggin stone and I want to be able to defend myself and my family.

They wouldn't get him.  He's got swords and stuff, he could chop their heads off.  And bullets don't kill zombies anyway.

    Are you joking me?
The one and only way to kill zombies is to face them like a man. Guns run out of bullets but I never run out of Talwar and Dhal.

If you're seriously insecure about your family security I can sort you out some swords and knives and shit. It wont be quick but you bet you'll get them.

Yeah. You want me to sort you out as well? The one I have at the moment is a showpiece but Ive sharpened the arrows up and the quoits as well. And yeah, they are beautiful, pieces of art. Ever weapon fascinates me because how different it is to something else and the balance and the shape and all that and when they decorate the hilt, and the different styles you get. Just holding one fills me with energy, if you know what I mean. It's like having a new arm, but an arm that feels different every time and you can change it. Its like a part of you but it exists in its own right, if ya know what I mean. I have my preferences but Ive never not liked a weapon I came across. Might not be the best to fight with but god they are beautiful.

That's exactly why Im never ever ever letting my brother go weapon shopping again. He's just gonna waste money like with the kirpan he brought home. Ive made it fightworthy but there are many more stronger blades out there with less curve. It's a showpiece but it's all covered up and in the closet. lol The only problem is smuggling them back. Dudes check our baggage but rarely do they find the stuff.

But the arrows are good. Very strong and good edge.
