  • Help!
     OP - April 16, 2009, 02:29 AM

I am having major problems with my PC.

I was trying to run a format on it and because it wasn't booting from CD, I just did an install and used partition magic to try and get rid of the old copy of Windows.

The problem is, I did something and now whenever I try to boot from hard disk, it says 'hard disk error occurred, press ctrl +alt + delete to restart'.

I tried to boot from CD on several occasions but it just won't do it. It says 'boot from cd?' and I type 'Y' and then it says 'Press any key to boot from cd...' and then does nothing.

My computer is pretty new so I can't see why the hard disk would be faulty. It comes with a warranty so I'm wondering if I should take the PC back to the place I got it built and not tell them what I did, so that if they find that the hard disk is faulty, I won't have to dish out for a new one Tongue But that's a last resort.

Anyone got any ideas what I could do to fix it?

    seems like a hard-drive failure.

No, I took it to the place I got it built and they said it's because I did a secure erase on my partitioned hard drive...so there's no OS installed...I can't boot from disc because the copy of Windows I have is not legit and can't seem to find a bootable version. :(

They tested the hardware and tried to install their trial copy of Windows...it booted up, but they were asking for 80 AUD to install a trial copy on there (and I would get a serial key to get it in full) which was a rip off so I said no.

I normally don't recommend a Linux operating system to people who are not so tech-savvy, but since you have no working Windows installation on your harddrive and you have trouble finding a bootable Windows CD, you might as well say what the hell and give Ubuntu a try. It's a great, easy to install Linux distribution and the best thing is, you can download it and distribute it for free.

Here you can get the most recent, stable release of Ubuntu (choose the Desktop CD 64bit, I assume your new PC has a 64bit CPU):
    http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/8.10/
This is the upcoming one, it will be finalized in a few days:
    http://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/

(Note: The first number denotes the year and the second number the month in which the release was/is made.)

Even if you don't want to permanently install and use it, I'm sure it will be useful for you when you again have problems booting Windows in the future, because you can boot from the Ubuntu CD into a fully working Linux system where you can start Firefox to use the internet or use other programs to diagnose your PC (well if you dare to learn them Tongue.)

    In any case, good luck!

Thanks for the offer, Tut, but since I'm in Oz it will take ages to get to me...I could get a hold of one from my boyfriend's mates.

I have also found that the problem is that I can't type Y when it asks me if I want to boot from disc. This is because my keyboard is wireless and gets the signal from a USB receiver. I'm going to borrow a corded keyboard off someone and try it again.

Thanks for the suggestion! I was considering Linux but I'm worried that I won't find any software that runs on it? Will it be compatible with all the other programs like Office?

You can use Open Office, which is also compatible with Windows and IMO is better than the MS Office. In fact there is a stack of software you can run with Linux. It's hardware and drivers that can present problems. If you're running dual boot no problem though.

    This should hopefully work..

I'll see how it goes with the corded keyboard. Hopefully it will let me boot from disc then I can reinstall Windows.

I hate how you have to do the Windows Genuine Advantage thing....it's bloody annoying!

There is no Genuine Advantage in Windows. Tis all bullshit. Grin

What do you mean? I've been trying to get rid of it for ages...Windows is bloody expensive too.

It was a joke. Genuine advantage <=> Windows <=> not.

Anyway what is the Genuine Advantage thing? I'm still on XP and have never had to reinstall it.

    Ooops. My bad.

They basically want to make sure you have a genuine version of Windows so they are making you validate it using this software. Previous times you could defeat it by using cracks, but it's not working for me.

Oh right. I'm ashamed to say that my copy of XP is legit. Came loaded in the box when I bought it.

Yes my friends pc is also screwing her up with that genuine thing. Keeps telling her that her xp is not genuine. Which it isnt because a friend fixed her pc for her.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

are you familiar with the term: "getting sued"? lol
  • Re: Help!

Yeah I am, but they can't sue me for saying there's no genuine advantage in using Windows. Grin

Why do so many have to be anti-establishment or anti-capitalist mentality? does anyone bother to research? or do they just enjoy being pseudo-intellectuals and parrot left wing conspiracy theories in the belief they are sounding smart?

Bill Gates is a philanthropist as an atheist/agnostic he has donated more wealth as a single individual to the causes of poverty then any theist or left wing cartoon.

Good on him for donating a little less than a third of his multi-billion dollar wealth to charities.  Afro

But as a student, I'm still not paying that much for a copy of Windows XP. It's a rip off.

I'm not denying that, however there are other operating systems that do an equally good job. Hence I see nothing wrong with stating that the use of Windows provides no genuine advantage.
