Probe call in Afghan 'convert' row

A former Afghan prime minister has called for an inquiry after Al Jazeera broadcast footage showing Christian US soldiers appearing to be preparing to try and convert Muslims in Afghanistan.

Ahmed Shah Ahmedzai said there must be a "serious investigation" after military chaplains stationed in the US air base at Bagram near Kabul were filmed discussing how to distribute bibles printed in the country's main Pashto and Dari languages.

In one recorded sermon, Lieutenant-Colonel Gary Hensley, the chief of the US military chaplains in Afghanistan, tells soldiers that, as followers of Jesus Christ, they all have a responsibility "to be witnesses for him".

"The special forces guys - they hunt men basically. We do the same things as Christians, we hunt people for Jesus. We do, we hunt them down," he says.

"Get the hound of heaven after them, so we get them into the kingdom. That's what we do, that's our business."

    <snip>

Hughes said: "The only reason they would have these documents there was to distribute them to the Afghan people and I knew it was wrong, and I knew that filming it ? documenting it would be important."

Pentagon officials have so far not responded to a copy of the footage provided to them, but the distribution of Bibles in a place as politically sensitive as Afghanistan is bound to cause deep concern in Washington, our correspondent says.

    Guidelines

It is not clear if the presence of the bibles and practice of calling on soldiers to be "witnesses" for Jesus continues, but they were filmed a year ago despite regulations by the US military's Central Command that expressly forbid "proselytising of any religion, faith or practice".

Shan, do you realise what these clowns are likely to do with this stupidity? I mean in the strategic and diplomatic senses.

I realize it is a highly sensitive situation. I also realize what a violent religion charismatic Pentecostalism is. The last thing we need is a bunch of ex-Muslims Benny Hinns running around....or worse. Yes, it does get worse.

Oh great now we're gonna have to put up with the Christians crying persecution again. Since they were there in an official capacity they should not have been doing this FULL STOP. Throw the book at 'em I say.

No. That is not the last thing we want. The last thing we want is for the Taliban to win because certain elements in the US forces alienate the Afghan population and government. That is the problem. It doesn't matter if the Christians are violent or peaceful. It makes no difference in this situation.

Propogating even the mildest brand of Christianity undercuts any legitimacy the coalition forces have there.

If Christians want to evangelize, they need to be doing it on their own, completely outside of the US gov't, and at their own risk.

For a backward, ultra-conservative and ultra-religious Islamic country like Afghanistan this is the worst thing the stupid arseholes could have done and will drive the illiterate masses straight back into the arms of the Taliban when they might have been won over for democracy and modernization.

But of course these evangelical fuckwits don't get it.

Their mentality is disgusting beyond words. They have the gun in one hand and the bible in the other - how are they different from the Islamist fuckwits hiding out in the mountains of Tora Bora?

Oh yes, Shan... silly me... there is a BIG difference.... Christianity is true, while Islam is the work of Satan.

Yes it's true. They are on the government's watch. If they want to get out bibles...they need to do it on their breaks and be waaaay more covert than they are being. Hopefully, these are faithful translations....because if they're not, they may do more harm than good.

And Hassan, why are you assuming they are illiterate masses? Why on earth would discovering a bible cause a Muslim to rage. He or she can take or leave it....or even burn it....and you don't know if their are not some Muslims wanting to read the bible. You really don't, as I don't either....but it may be an answer to some Muslim's prayers. we do not know that.

What percentage of all the things there is to know do any of us know? There is a chance a Muslim may find the bible he or she has been praying for....that's why I hope it's a faithful translation.

No. I happen to be looking at the elephants hind end right now....and there are Pastors like Benny Hinn, Joel Osteen, Todd something or other that kicks people in their faces with is biker boots, Ted Haggard.....and a whole boat-load of others that are servants for Satan pretending to be servants of God.

And I understand you don't believe in Satan, but....whatever.

Yes, that's what they're doing wrong.

They should be taking the bible to the Muslims in their lunch break.

If only they had your good sense and clarity of vision, Shan.  Roll Eyes

Even if it was going to be 'helpful' for a few of the Afghans (which I have a hard time believing) - evangelizing anything to people when their vulnerable and desperate is less than sincere.  When it's being piggy backed on military occupation, it's galling.

This seems a bit hyped. I cant believe al jazeera ran it as a major story.

Looks like 12 guys, who look like POGS who never leave the base anyway, having a prayer meeting. Not really a big deal, honestly.

    Quote
"That specific case involved a soldier who brought in a donation of translated Bibles that were sent to his personal address by his home church. He showed them to the group and the chaplain explained that he cannot distribute them," said Major Jennifer Willis.

"The translated Bibles were never distributed as far as we know, because the soldier understood that if he distributed them he would be in violation of general order 1, and he would be subject to punishment."

    This just seems over hyped.
And way too overhyped to be all over the news feeds.

As far a preaching stuff and bibles go, they are allowed, and chaplains usually set up a table near their offices for them, and anyone can tale one. They also will have Qurans, Book of Mormons, JW stuff, and whatever else. Sometimes people will leave them on benches in hallways along with panphlets and stuff too
I think it is fine, to be honest. It never bothered me, I actually liked it, because I enjoy reading and learning, and I've never felt intimidated about it.
In fact, one time I left a copy of "end of faith" in the chaplains corner.

Just a quick aside, Bagram is huge...really huge, probably close to 10,000 people there....that video...is how many people were at the church thingy.  I was in the army for a long time, most soldiers religiousness doesnt extend beyond tattoos.

Oddly enough, when I was under capoc, I had to deal with people (local) and talk to them much, and I was briefed that if someone asks me (and they do, because they are obsessed with religion) to tell them I was christian, because being an atheist would be offensive to them, and they would respect me more if they thought I was pious.

Too give an idea of the "hype" I was talking about:

From Huffington post article I was reading earlier:

    Quote
"some U.S. soldiers have been seeking to use their positions of power in Iraq and Afghanistan to preach Christianity. But this does not come as news to Muslims, who have been long aware of these proselytizing efforts at the end of a gun."

    Yaaaa, this is dangerously exaggerated
