Hahahah, I'm such a douche in MW2, I always carry a stinger and track those UAVs before they can get a hit.

It is a good strat on team games.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Huge Luis Royo fan, and this is his latest work.  The Dead Moon collection.

The guy is a god in the artworld as far as I am concerned.

Because that chick is actually called Naerys. I would explain where she comes from, but it would sound extremely nerdy.

The sister of King Aegon the Unworthy and Prince Aemon the Dragonknight was beautiful as well, but hers was a very fine and delicate beauty, almost unworldy. She was a wisp of a woman, smaller even than Dany (to whom she bears a certain resemblence), very slender, with big purple eyes and fine, pale, porcelain skin, near translucent. Naerys had none of Dany's strength, however. She was sickly as a child and almost died in the cradle; thereafter she found most physical activity to be very taxing. She loved music and poetry, played the harp very well, enjoyed sewing and embroidering. She was devout as well, and often found solace in the pages of The Seven-Pointed Star. After the birth of her son, she begged Aegon to have the Faith release her from her marriage vows so she could become a septa, but he refused. Naerys dressed well, but simply, and seldom wore her crown or any other jewelry. Though she had the silver-gold hair of the Targaryens, she often bound it up beneath a hair net or concealed it beneath a cowl. She ate but little and was painfully thin, almost emaciated. Her marriage was a very unhappy one, and it was said that only her son Daeron and her brother Aemon knew how to make her laugh. You will probably want to paint her sitting in a window seat, sewing or reading, with a sad and tired look on her face.

I'm guessing this is some sort of character from a fantasy novel(s)?

It's slightly worse than that. That particular character doesn't appear in the books. She's part of the history of that kingdom. So yeah, super nerdy of me.

Oh don't worry at all. I used to be a massive star wars nerd and know plenty of periphery characters from side novels and comics that never existed in the actual movies or games. So I understand.

Has anybody wondered why we create and use avatars in the first place? What story do they tell? "Why do we construct a “false” image of ourselves which stands for us in a virtual community?"

Yep! Should have put it in quotes really - fixed. It's intriguing though - this is something that is well established in psychoanalysis. "In sexual online games for example, a shy man often assumes an onscreen persona of an attractive promiscuous woman." As if he is trying to capture the essence of that which eludes him.

But I mean seriously are we trying to read the intentions of trolls as well then?

Does the man that chooses an avatar of a hot woman in WoW really equal the man that puts on a wig and goes and sucks dicks behind glory holes?

I admit that it can be interesting to study avatars and it should be done. But how effective is the analysis? I'm not even sure that word should be used since how can a subjective study be effective? Effective in the sense of gathering hard data and facts. Can we discern laws here?

OK maybe I'm wrong, but the study of Internet phenomena can quickly become pseudo-science. Research done by people who are not totally familiar with the settings. Like cultural critics of rap music, that are not really fan of the music, and don't really understand it.

Damn, I think I just shot myself in the foot there, feet rather. DAMN IT KENAN!!! Start a thread, let's throw down.

I guess the best analogy would be anthropology. I would guess that this science has evolved a  lot, much of it due to really understanding the people you are studying. And not imposing your views on them. For good or bad, trying to your best to be as objective as possible.

Can we really say we have gotten this far? Can study 4Chan in the same manner? The community of memes and avatars, are they like the community of real life societies?

There are real life societies of BDSM and D&D games. But are these like real life communities? Like small villages? Or are they more like play-make communities? Stuck to a certain period of time and place.

Can the study of avatars be like the study of the choice of music? Or the clothes you wear? Or the furniture you have? What can we really say about a person in regards to this?

And if a person says something about themselves in relation to what they wear and what they choose to buy, how useful is that information? All of it is subjective, both the meaning of the objects and the meaning of the meaning.

Can we really say we have gotten this far? Can study 4Chan in the same manner? The community of memes and avatars, are they like the community of real life societies?

Primarily it still is a community of people. Who hide in anonimity.

Does the man that chooses an avatar of a hot woman in WoW really equal the man that puts on a wig and goes and sucks dicks behind glory holes?

(You know about glory holes you perv!) Perhaps the analogy is not so dissimilar. Have you heard of Second Life and issues they had with paedophiles?

Can the study of avatars be like the study of the choice of music? Or the clothes you wear? Or the furniture you have? What can we really say about a person in regards to this?

I wonder if avatar infact can convey even more than that. "Choice" of music, clothes or furniture can all be a result of sociall pressures.

Problems is I know next to nothing about this issue. I wish somebody smarter would shed some light on this.

Avatars are a strange thing, because in our case, the avatars most people have do not reflect CEMB. The signature usually do. They are often related to religion or something similar.

Compare with the avatars of users to FFI? Do they reflect the feel of the forum? How is this "feel" created? By the moderators, the users? The content? Does this not change? Does then not the feel of the forum change?

It's a good point. Why do we choose the avatar? Is it to say something about our username? Then our avatar is an extension of that. Is it our ideology? The problem is assuming that we can say anything at all.

    Let's study

    Iblis

    The name

    Signature

    Avatar

What you think? What does it say about him? The change of avatars, how often, and what kind?

btw tell me about Second Life and pedos.

Paedophiles live out their fantasies in a virtual world:
    http://technology.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/tech_and_web/the_web/article2774271.ece

This phenomenon is interesting because it is causing no direct harm (consenting adults “playing” in a virtual environment) yet there was a public outrage as a result.
Should virtual paedophilia be banned? How about virtual murder?
