  • Gay Muslim in EastEnders
     OP - May 28, 2009, 09:39 PM

EastEnders is to tackle a storyline which will feature a Muslim man embarking upon a gay affair.

Newcomer Syed Masood, played by Marc Elliott, will fall for openly gay man Christian Clarke (John Partridge) and the pair will share an on-screen kiss.

The plot is expected to hit TV screens from next month.

"I think EastEnders would be doing the programme a disservice if they didn't give a voice to various communities," Elliot told the BBC Asian Network.

"I think that's really important because I think London is a very ethnically diverse multicultural place, and EastEnders has a job to reflect that in the storylines it gives people and the characters they have on board."

His character, who joined the cast recently, has been trying to make amends with his family.

His mother Zainab Masood, played by Nina Wadia, has also been seen trying to set him up with various women from "good families".

However, the gay storyline has been criticised by Asghar Bokhari of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee.

"The Muslim community deserves a character that represents them to the wider public because Islamophobia is so great right now," he said.

"There's a lack of understanding of Muslims already and I think EastEnders really lost an opportunity to present a normal friendly Muslim character to the British public."

But the show's executive producer Diedrick Santer said it was important to tackle issues which reflect real life.

"It's really important that on EastEnders we give the Masoods big stories.

"Sometimes there's a danger of being too careful with black or Asian characters that we might go into territories that might offend.

"But it seems to me if we steer away from any controversy, they don't stand a chance of being a great EastEnders family - they'll just be in their kitchen unit making curries for years and years and that's not going to be very interesting."

Yusuf Wehebi from Imaan - an organisation that supports gay Muslims - agreed with him.

"It is high time that the invisible minority became a visible minority," he said.

"It is entirely possible to be Muslim and gay and there's many of us in Britain today.

"It is great that the BBC have had the courage to raise such an important social issue in our society today."

We need to get people to think that there are no gay Muslims, that will help crush Islamophobia. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. About as much sense as a solar power torch.

Yeah what the story really needs is an imam or an Islamic scholar quoting the party line and giving chapter and verse and everything.  yes

By "Muslim" they mean typical Asian family with a Muslim background, that's all. They have a restaurant or shop where they sell halaal meat and erm... well actually that's about as Muslim as they get! I've seen a couple of episodes of Eastenders because my other half likes to watch it, but seriously, this is not something to start changing your evening schedule over.

There is no Muslim symbolism AT ALL. No hijab, no mosque-going, no daawah, no topi, no juba, no beard, no niqab, no praying, no prayer mats, not even any Islamic calligraphy on the walls!

I'd be surprised if the family's reaction will be "This is haraaam!" No, it will probably just be anger, with no religious reference at all.

There just isn't going to be any fuss..

The unlived life is not worth examining.

I only stopped watching eastenders properly in the last few months, but I do know the family in the show lol and there has been one other moment where they were tackling the time the mother was in a house where her husbands brother, or some other member of the family set fire to (can't remember how) the kitchen she was in as an attempt to honour kill her.  Her husband was the one who saved her.

It was explained as a cultural not religious effect, which really pissed me off.

I can't remember exactly, it was something to do with shame, and it was her telling her daughter about what had happened to her in her past and why she was afraid of kitchens since then.  So it wasn't that it happened in the show, just that they talked about it happening in her past.

Actually there is a big canvas with the Ayatul-Kursi written on it in the hallway of their house.  whistling2

The Muslim family on Eastenders are rather liberal, imo. On yesterday's episode, the mother (Zainab), advised her son Syed that the only way he can reclaim the attention of his former GIRLFRIEND was if he started DATING new girls.  Tongue

Yep, that's the answer. US soaps have almost no working-class characters-- all the characters are wealthy professionals and all the actors look like models. Add to that some utterly ridiculous plotlines (like a character dying in some crazy way then reappearing a few months later explaining how they really didn't die-- in "Days" some of the characters have "died" half a dozen times) and absolutely awful acting and dialogue, American soaps are pretty fuckin ridiculous. When I was last over there, you guys had an Aussie soap called "Neighbours" on the tube-- American soaps are much closer to that than Eastenders or Coronation Street (except I think the chicks on Neighbours are a little hotter than the ones on American soaps).

    fuck you

Agreed, I find american soaps are not realistic or gritty enough for me, they don't mirror real life.  I don't watch aussie soaps either but I find them more acceptable than american ones.

British ones are grey and gloomy and gritty, they do sometimes have far out there storylines, and they return people from the dead, like when eastenders brought back dirty den from the dead, but it's really rare.

Anyway I can relate and I can handle watching the not so sexy women lol without feeling like I am lacking in some new operative procedure way.  Cheesy

Haha, just watched a quick clip on TV, BBC3 I think on in the living room where my younger sis and bro were watching, and there was this scene with a gay Muslim guy named Syed and a Mullah. Mullah was implying that homosexuality is wrong and Syed was saying "there are forums on the Internet". Hin, hint, wink, wink, LOL! This is great, a fantastic way for BBC producers to get a message across to young Muslim viewers who fill the void anyway. Let's hope they find this forum in particular! Cheesy
