    Woman who enslaved family jailed

Naseebah Bibi's daughters-in-law did not speak English
A 63-year-old woman who imprisoned her three daughters-in-law, treating them as "slaves and dogs", has been jailed for seven years.
Naseebah Bibi would not let the women leave the family home in Blackburn, Lancashire, without her permission, Preston Crown Court heard.
One victim told police she had been forced to work on an industrial sewing machine day and night for 13 years.
The women had arranged marriages to Bibi's three sons, their first cousins.
Bibi, of Pringle Street, had denied falsely imprisoning Nagina Akhtar between 1993 and 2006, Tazeem Akhtar from 2001 to 2003 and Nisbah Akhtar between 2005 and 2007.

But she was convicted at the court on 14 April.
All three women were brought to the UK following arranged marriages to Bibi's three sons but were subjected to beatings and abuse from her after they arrived.
Judge Robert Brown, sentencing, said it was evident that her victims had suffered physical and psychological trauma and had spent long periods "living in fear".
He ordered that Bibi serve three-and-a-half years in prison before being allowed out on licence, but would then face further monitoring.
He said: "It seems to be necessary in the public interest that you should be subject to a long period of supervision after you are released from prison so that your situation and that in your household can be monitored.
"At the same time, because of your poor health and in particular your mental health, I shall keep the custodial element of sentence as short as I can, consistent with my duty to punish you, to deter you from further offences and to protect the public."
Judge Brown said he would be contacting the immigration authorities about a fourth woman who had been betrothed to one of her sons.

This is absolutely ridiculous! You may as well let her go and tell her to be a good citizen from now on with that ludicrous sentence! finmad finmad finmad Flaming mad Flaming mad Flaming mad

A 63-year-old woman who imprisoned her three daughters-in-law, treating them as "slaves and dogs", has been jailed for seven years.

Naseebah Bibi would not let the women - also her nieces - leave the family home in Blackburn, Lancashire, without permission, Preston Crown Court heard.

Judge Robert Brown, sentencing, said it was evident her victims had suffered physical and psychological trauma and had spent long periods "living in fear".

The court heard how her daughters-in-law had high expectations of a happy family life in England when they married their first cousins in Pakistan.

But instead they were abused and allowed no contact with the outside world.

Bibi slapped the women across the face or hit them with a brush handle when they disobeyed her or answered back, the court heard.

Judge Brown said he had taken into account the "cultural element" of the case.

"I take into account that in arranging the marriages in the first place you felt obliged to follow the wishes of your own parents concerning arranged marriages," he said.

"But none of these facts can be an excuse for the degree of cruelty and imprisonment to which the three victims were subjected."

I was thinking exactly the same, Marleya.  Why was she the only one prosecuted?  Where was the rest of the family while this was going on?

Believe it or not, this sort of behaviour is not uncommon from Pakistani Mothers-in-law, although not to this extreme. I can think of women in my own family who have behaved in this way to their daughters-in-law.

    Note:

"The message I would like to say to all mother in laws out there is if you take a daughter in, treat them like a daughter, not like a daughter-in-law."

So in their culture, this is how a daughter-in-law is to be expected to be treated.

What we need is to challenge the views of these cultures. We can't go on tolerating cultural relativism.

This article mentions the husbands - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/7998935.stm

They were cleared as they wanted no part in the marriage; they already had partners. The fact that they married them should be enough to imprison them as they ARE part of it! Disgusting bastards, how could they let this go on for so many years!

I think it's probably due to the over-crowded prisons, they judges probably have a lot of pressure on them to provide smaller sentences or even none-at-all and instead recommend community service.

They wanted no part? At least one of these unfortunate ' brides' had children though.

They could just abolish all victimless "crimes", that would make room for genuine criminals. But over-crowded prisons is still a piss poor excuse for only three and a half years for slavery. The British government should just ship her and all the others involved to texas, atleast there they will get a real prison sentrance.

I'm surprised there isn't more of an outrage over Britain's treatment of prisoners. I know they give you bloody x-boxes in prison! The Conservatives want to stop the policy of releasing prisoners early, I hope they reform the prison system too as it is in drastic need of change.

I agree, the rapes, bribes and corruption in todays prisons (not just the UK) is disgusting. And the amount of laws it's possible to break is also alarming. Many of the people that suffer in prisons are there for no adequate reason.

Bugger all, none of the main parties have prison reform as a main policy. This really needs to be a priority.
