    The neck is all front, middle and back. It makes up the entire thing, and then you have things inside it.

    So from that one example you conclude that everything in the body can be easily classified into front, middle and back?

    Give me an example that cant be classified into a particular position...

    Can I just ask where this is going? It sounds like you actually think the Qur'an has made a meaningful discovery by saying the semen comes from between the front and the back of the body...

    I'm saying it hasn't because:

    a) If the front and the back of the body means the boundaries, then everything is between the front and the back

    b) If the front and the back of the body are referring to 2 of 3 layers (where the "middle" is the 3rd), then it is merely subjective what counts and front, middle and back because many items in the body will be ambiguous.

    It sounds like you reject (a). If you accept (b) and you believe that thinking of the body as being divisable into 3 layers is a meaningful way of talking about the body, then you discard my objection altogether... in which case your left with no objection that I can think of. Do you have an objection to the Qur'anic verse in question?

    To say that the ribs are in front of the body is also incorrect. The ribs surround  the upper torso and are attached to the spine. There is nothing BETWEEN the ribs and spine.

    I'm not saying that, I'm just saying it is easy to define the position of something as you seem to be confused over it *shrugs*

    I don't think it's meaningful as it's too simplistic but if you want to apply that way of thinking then I don't see where the confusion lies for you. It's easy to say where something is relative to the middle (subjectively of course).


    This 'debate' is crossing over into semantics which I hate, lets end it shall we as it's going nowhere and making us both confused Wink

    The guy in the video was trying to say that when the Qur'an says "between the ribs and the backbone" it means anywhere VERTICALLY between the ribs and the backbone, right? So by that approach, my head is between my ribs and my backbone, my feet are between my ribs and my backbone, my testicles are between my ribs and my backbone...

    No, horizontally it makes bugger all sense.

    Think about it. The PROSTATE is between the RIBS and the BACKBONE. That's what the video is saying.

    Do you know what I mean when I say VERTICALLY? Yes, the prostate is NOT "directly" between the ribs and the backbone, but, if we could draw a vertical line on a human body stood up straight where the ribs are and do the same where the backbone is, then the prostate would fall in between the area between the ribs and the backbone.

    You said that talking of the prostate being vertically in between the ribs and the backbone doesn't make sense. It does make sense.

    As in, see where the ribs are on a standing human body, draw a vertical line (basically from the ground upwards) so that the vertical line PASSES THROUGH the ribs. Do the same for the backbone. Now you have an area in between the ribs and the backbone. That's what I meant by vertical and I think that is what was meant in the video. Now, if we take this approach, then the chances are that the place where semen is produced is probably contained within this area. Therefore, the Qur'an was making just as much a scientific discovery as saying "The heart is somewhere in the body". If you found that in the Qur'an you wouldn't think "And it really is! Wow, how did the Qur'an know that?!" No, you would rather say "well that isn't exactly a scientific discovery. It's actually common sense!"

    and why did you leave out "the back and the front of the body, ABDOMEN or TORSO" as stated in the video. The Quran is clear.

    "Front" "back" "abdomen" "torso" is not found in that Qur'anic verse, only "rib" and "backone" so I disregarded his 2nd statement. My reply was:

    If the idea of testicles being between the ribs and the backbone is ridiculous to you then why is the idea of the prostate being between the ribs and the backbone NOT ridiculous to you?

    The lungs and the heart are in between the back of the ribs and the front of the ribs.  As Bob said already its impossible to be between the ribs and the backbone as the ribs encircle the upper torso.

    This was his response:

    You cannot say in any way that the Quran contradicts science on this matter."

    I'm not really sure what he means by the "horizontal plane". Only thing I can think of is that the prostate is at the same height as the spine and ribs, but I'm not sure that is correct; isn't the prostate quite low down?

    Either way, by his last sentence it sounds like he realizes this isn't a miracle of the Qur'an, rather it is just a refutation of the claim that the Qur'an is contradictory to science. Whether or not it is a successful refutation, I don't know. I think I've forgotten what Hassan's point was. I'll go over it.

    No it's encircling the neck of the urinary bladder, but could be felt by inserting a finger up your ass. That's what urologists do to check upon the prostate to see if it was enlarged.

    The whole idea about semen is from an area between the ribs and the backbone is not valid argument, as sperms originate from the testicles which is hanging loose outside the body between the legs. Seminal fluid is just a medium or a transportation means for the sperms to reach the ovum from the female. Now the ova are produced by the ovaries which lies in the pelvis. That is another story! I wonder if the Quran or Hippocrates have mentioned anything about the uselessness of the sperm without an ovum?Huh?
