  • Are some religion better than others in principle?
     OP - June 25, 2009, 09:32 AM

As a Non-Muslim, Islam does not look morally correct to me because of its attitude towards Non-muslims. For a person of lower caste, Hinduism will not be morally correct.

However, as a Non-Buddhist, Buddhism seems quite harmless.

Just a small note, that I am not talking about people. There can be kind, generous Muslim and nasty Buddhist.

I've always kind of liked the Buddhists because they seem pretty laid back about it all. You don't ever seem to get Buddhist fanatics. On the other hand the whole karma thing can lead to a sort of "blame the victim" mentality at times. But yes, I think some religions are better than others in principle. A classic example would be the old Aztec religion. Just about anything would be better than that.

    oh no.............

Notion of Karma started with Hinduism but got quite evolved in Buddhism and Jainism. Generally Buddhist dont blame the victim but they use it for themselves to take up the responsibility.

Cheesy Yeah Xipe Totec was one of the ones I was thinking of. There are stacks of others too. The Aztecs were a wild bunch.

For the same reason, it should not be morally correct to someone of high caste either.  Same applies to Muslims.

I like the non-violence aspect of Jainism. But does anyone know if Jainism also include the caste system?

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

Jainism is a very good belief system. Jains don't believe in creator. They believe in Non-violence and Truth. Gandhi adopted these values less from Hinduism and more from Jainism. Gandhi's mother was a Jain.

So in principal, Jainism does not include caste system. But, only Vaishya 'third Hindu order' converted into Jainism. So, socially Jains follow it.

    Oh, they exist: http://www.michaelparenti.org/Tibet.html

Although some religions/ideologies may be more benign at their core (Buddhism is one of the better religions as, besides that whole reincarnation bullshit inherited from the Hindus, it's more secular philosophy than religion), but their adherents are human beings, and any ideology, secular or religious, that attracts a significant number of people and has been around long enough has the potential to attract violent fanatics.

People aren't buying Islam, kope, its growing because of high birth rates in muslim families.

People, white and otherwise, convert in and out of religions all the time.  Islam is not growing because of converts, its growing because of a relatively high birth rate among muslims.

Interesting article. It highlights one major problem with the whole karma theory: the fact that it lends itself to blaming people for situations beyond their control. Once that is in place the rest of the behaviour outlined in the article follows more or less logically.

And because some Muslims in families are too afraid to apostatize even if they do not believe, so they too are counted in the Muslim 'herd'.

My take is that all religion is bad to one degree or another.  Buddhism and neo-paganism  would be among the "least bad", christianity and islam are the absolute worst and I'm not sure right now who is in the lead for that particular dishonour.

As far as I am concerned, there is SOMETHING SERIOUSLY FUCKING WRONG with a religion that teaches "kill or convert the unbelievers by any means possible".

History lesson:  If people hadn't been threatened with death if they did not convert, islam would be a dead religion.
