It's not as expensive as every one seems to think to cook home made food. Find recipes that use tomatoes as the base and buy lots of tinned tomatoes. They are so cheap!! And can be used in so many ways with a bit of imagination. Lentils are cheap as hell too. If you have any markets near you then I'd recommend buying fresh meat and veg from there, it's always cheap in them places.

It's really cost effective to make food in large batches too. I tend to do that and fridgerate/freeze the left overs.

Have you tried wholemeal pasta? I really like it. If you're eating mainly vegetarian meals like you mentioned, it's probably worth keeping a check on your protein intake. Pulses, seeds, nuts, etc, can help ensure you're getting enough (depending on how active you are).

^ + 1. However, I must say some butchers aren't really cost effective. This week I found it cheaper to buy from Asda's Extra Special range for matured rack of lamb than go to the butchers.

Agree with the cooking in batches technique. I usually cook for about 8 people (there are two of us), keeping some for lunch the next day and freezing portions for consumption when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to cook. Tinned tomatoes are indeed cheap and versatile as a base for various pasta dishes, chili, etc. A well-stocked spice rack is also well worth having for these purposes.

Yeah of course I try to get all the nutrients I need. I don't really care much about how fancy the food is. As long as I can get my fruits veggies and grains into my stomach, that's all I need. Because I try to save more money for other things.... Wink

I personally cant stand wholemeal stuff. Wholemeal rice is one the worst things I've ever tasted.

Neither can I. I can't stand the taste. Funny thing is, I can tolerate the 50/50 bread you get, but wholemeal is just bleeeurgh!

Mind you, my mum makes chapattis with wholemeal flour and they are gooooooooood.

I love the 50/50 bread too. Doesn't have the horrible taste and is very soft yes

I make my own wholemeal bread, so i can kinda tweak it to my tastes. But then, I also like brown rice.  Wink

I always use 100% wholewheat bread. I usually take green peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, brocolli, spinach carrots..... then i chop 'em all up and throw them in the pan, pour some canola, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, and lots o' spices, and cook 'em. And I boil pasta. Yep, that be my dinner alright!
