  • Christian Rock sucks, allow me to introduce you to "Sufi Rock"!
     OP - July 22, 2009, 01:40 PM

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92Tc5VI6d44

A song venerating the sufi saint, Lal Shahbaz Qalandar.

Artistically, a lot better than the likes of Sonseed in my opinion.

(The Pakistanis on this forum probably already know this band)

I've been meaning to look into Junoon. I heard that Salman Ahmad gave Basim Usmani from the Taqwacore band 'The Kominas' his guitar (or maybe that was just in Michael Muhammad Knight's book 'Osama Van Halen' Huh?).

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

Yeah, they are quite a good band and I would definitely reccomend them. I don't know about that, never heard of The Kominas or taqwacore!

No its not meant to be rock. Its sufi rock! It combines rock with traditional sufi qawwali music etc. Have you not heard of junoon? This song is actually a cover of a Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan song.

It doesn't sound half bad....and I'm still embarrassed by Sonseed.

I've heard the original as my dad listens to that type of stuff. I cant stand qawwali music though so don't like the song in the OP.

I absolutely love Qawwali. I know this is a cliche but there is an energy in qawwali music that I can't really explain. Jeff Buckley was a big fan of Qawwali as well. He referred to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan as "my Elvis" and even covered one of his songs.

Here is probably the most famous song by Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, listen to the tablas at 2:00 and 4:42. Amazing!

By the way, apparently when Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan died, his body was dug up and his tongue was wrapped around his neck (because he was a musician and music is bad).

I could never get past the fact that Salman is related to two of the most vapid women in Muslim America.  I know it's not his fault, but then again, no one forced him to do isufirock.com with them (and bonus, their equally vapid son / brother).  But LOLz you have to love "Sufi leaders" who are among GW Bush's biggest financial supporters.   Afro

But to bring this back around to the Kominas and MMK, Salman's cousin Asma Gull Hasan tried to sue them b/c the Kominas wrote a dirty little song about her and she was so sure that MMK put them up to it (and in one of his books, he wrote some nasty passage about her as well).  http://www.denverpost.com/newsheadlines/ci_7262553

Personally I dislike any religious or "spiritual" rock music or hiphop at all whether it's Christian or Muslim or whatever. It usually ends up sounding very corny and forced.  Even Matisyahu had one good song and the rest of it was meh.

Agree with fading, I can never bring myself to enjoy such music because the whole song is usually about glorifying an invisible & bigoted entity.  I used to like "kum-bayah my lord Kum by yah" when I was about 5 years old, and when  the penny dropped I never liked it again.

I don't really agree. The reason I listen to Qawwali is the same reason I listen to French hip hop. I don't understand the french language but I listen to the music because I like it.

Yeah, isn't she a riot. MMK included her suit in the appendix to "Blue-Eyed Devil". Grin

I don't have an issue with music that is religiously oriented but in a traditional format, be it Catholic hymns or old spirituals or qawwali. It's when people try to make it "cool" by doing rock or hip hop that I start laughing.  It's like the old pastor going around saying "Isn't God totally rad, dudes?" or something.  Just corny and forced.

There is a difference between this sort of "sufi rock" and stuff like sonseed and zain bhikha. The main difference is this isn't preachy religious music, but is just influenced by devotional sufi music. They are not using the music as a medium to "educate" people about religion but the reason they are playing this "sufi rock" is because they are influenced by sufi music.

And on a side note, I really hate Zain Bhikha! That is the sort of shit, preachy music which is aimed at young people that both you and I despise!

Well, okay, it's a matter of personal tastes I guess. I find Salman Ahmed to be as irritating as Matisyahu or the "sufi jazz" artists or any of that.  It just annoys me.

But Zain Bhika et al are just as bad.  I can't even listen to Zain Bhika he annoys me so much.  I think most nasheeds today are smarmy, childish, condescending and simplistic.  I would much rather have a prophet-worshipping qasida from 100 years ago than some of this shit today -- if I was being forced to listen to any of this stuff to begin with.

Do you know that some people even posted a video on youtube of a nasheed by Irfan Makki and were going around saying it was 'Mikaeel Jackson's last recorded song - after he converted to al-Islaam, mashAllaaaaaaaah!'

I much rather prefer the old stuff of any of it - Christian, Muslim, whatever.  If I have to listen to it at all.

I just noticed a lyric in a Junoon song that is quite interesting for a Pakistani band:

    "Chor meri khuda"

    which means, "forget my god"!

What is their position on religion? I remember hearing that in an interview, Salman Ahmed had said "Music is my country, music is my religion" when asked about religion.

I would love it if the most popular pakistani band were atheists!

Its "Chorr meri khata" which means (to Allah to) "Forget my mistake".

"Chorr meri khuda" is incorrect because the term for god in Urdu "khuda" is a masculine. So it should be the masculine sounding "mera Khuda" rather than "meri Khuda" which is feminine.

    God, I love Urdu  grin12

By the way, the most critically acclaimed band in Pakistan, Mekaal Hasan Band, has a Pakistani Christian lead composer and guitarist in Mekaal Hasan himself.
