    Where is Marmalade-Lady these days?

    Look not above, there is no answer there;
    Pray not, for no one listens to your prayer;
Near is as near to God as any Far,
And Here is just the same deceit as There.

Yes, hope she's OK - I know she was going through a difficult time.

I've done a DNA test on myself and I came to discover that my sister and I are 20% Persian.

Nice, I need to do this. I'm positive I came out of Africa at one point too, by 100% I meant both my rents are Bengali, from Sylhet - the region which accounts for 90% of Indian restaurant owners in the UK the last I heard!

PS: Yes  she was ranting, and a good rant indeed! How's uni?

I think Bangalis in the UK, and in Saudi Arabia tend to have a general low reputation. It's a different picture in the U.S though.

I don't think this is just coincidence either. Bengali relatives who've made it to LA, Singapore and Australia are more educated and "go it alone" rather than the mass who migrate to destinations where there is a sizable population, e.g. Brick Lane in London. Don't know about all the cities - but just initial thoughts. Relatives in LA hardly pray, or care. Quite different in East London.

    +1.

No, I think they just get put in the same bracket as Indians & Pakistanis (which is not a great one I might add)

    Quote
Btw, HO, I don't think there is anything such as 100% Bangali blood. Bangladesh's history is much like the history of U.S. Today's Bangladeshis are actually not really natives of the land. Then again, when you think about it, no one really is 100% of any particular race. They are all mixed. I've done a DNA test on myself and I came to discover that my sister and I are 20% Persian.

Guys, speaking of Bengalis in Saudi Arabia, is it true that they get treated like slaves there? I hear they are very ill treated there and are not very much respected. I think this goes for any Desis in that country. Desis in Saudi Arabia holds the same negative stereotype as Mexican and Blacks here in the U.S.

Yep. Well thats if you go there as part of the low-skill labour class.

We lived in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait and they practically treat Bangladeshis like slaves there. No human rights whatsovever. They cart them around to work sites like sheep in trucks (trucks, not buses). They also regularly rape and murder their filipino and bengali maids. We had bangladeshi maids of our own when we were kids and they told us some serious horror stories about workin at Kuwaiti houses.

We were fine because my dad is an engineer. But still the arabs there look down at you - even if they are fucktards who can barely read!

I was telling my dad yesterday that because of this, Bangladesh needs to reject Islam. Because Islam really used as a takeover of the Bangladeshi people. Which is why most arabs have this superiority attitude towards Bangalis. I mean, to accept Islam by a Bangali, is like submitting to such attitude. Islam belongs where it came from--the dessert. Islam doesn't belong in Bangladesh, nor does Bangladesh belong to Islam. Surprisingly, he agreed.

    lol he agreed?

I totally agree too. I mean, I still respect our muslim heritage.. but I also deeply respect our buddhist and hindu heritage. Frankly throwing our lot in with "islam" and joining Pakistan was the worst idea ever. Look at how India is advancing. Bangladesh would have been much better off if it were simply part of India and viewed itself as part of Indian civilization, not Islamic.

But instead we're this poor shite hole who is a source for slave labour for the Arab gulf.  wacko

I think Islam doesn't belong in any desi country. Both Pakistan and Bangladesh would be better off without Islam. I know many Pakistani (some which are my closest friends) think the same way. Bangladesh really needs another revolution.

This may seem a bit "FFI" of me, and I typically don't think this way, but sometimes I do feel like going to Bangladesh and bombing every Mosque to the ground. Again, this just comes out frustration. I wouldn't actually advocate such actions.

EDIT: I don't want Bangladesh to be part of an "Indian civilization." It kinda defeats the purpose of our revolution. Bangladesh could learn a hell of a lot from India, Sweden, America, and other countries, but it's an independent country.

Islam does feel sort of out of place in the Bengal region in general. Same for Indonesia and Malaysia.

I don't think Bengalis would convert is the more Muhamamd-like version of Islam was marketed to them back in the day. You can blame the Sufis for that.

    *if

Umm, I'm talking medieval history there. Like back in the day when the Turks and Persians conquered us Islam was marketed to the masses not by your wahabbi arab types but much more nicer sufi persian types who came to Bengal as missionaries. The actual authorities never actually bothered to convert the locals, it was indpendent missionizing sufis from abroad that did.

And naturally that type of Islam was initially very benign and not the Muhammad's type of Islam. Hence why you see so many sufi Khanqahs and shrines all over Bangladeshi and Bengal. People are still fairly sufi, hence the inabilty for Islamic parties to win any elections.

Why does being Sufi stop them from winning any elections?  I would have thought it was better than being a wasabi, i mean wahabi, type?

Because Sufis are generally more secular than the rest. At least, from the ones I've met anyways.

What I meant was that Islamic fundamentalists (Jamaat-e-Islami) in Bangladesh have very little traction among the larger population because of both the secular nature of the people in general and the fact that a large percentage of Bengali Muslims are very sufi-oriented and hence the fundamentalist and political brand of Islam does not really appeal to them.

The actual Islamists running for elections in that country are *not* sufis, but wahhabists/salafist types.

Ah yeah. That's actually the bigger reason. They basically led the charge in slaughtering fellow bengalis during that period. Really helped Bengalis understand the heroic values of Islam very very well.

I wish a day comes when Pakistan too discards Islam completely and embraces Humanity first.

No it does not defeat the whole purpose of "Pakistan was created for Muslims" nonsense.

So what? Times change, people change. I dont want the past to be reversed because it simply cant be reversed.

Its about making your future worth the while, and hopefully someday Pakistan will realise its potential to discard religion even if it causes the Jamaat-e-Islami etc to commit suicide. (I would love that too)

If Pakistan renounced Islam tomorrow and all Pakistani's became agnostics - it still wouldn't change a backwards people. Cousin marriage, honour killings etc. would still be rampant but now done under a different name.

Sometime in future, I'll make a thread about what I liked in Bangladeshi society.  yes
