Nothing could have prepared me for it. I didn?t expect to have numerous banquets in my honour. I didn't expect to be showered with gifts. I didn't expect to have people staring at me everywhere I went. I didn?t expect to have groups of people following me around just to watch me. I didn't expect to be fed so much to the point that it became torture. I didn't expect the drive to Cox's Bazaar to be as terrifying as it was. It was quite surreal.  One day I would be lounging in a house furnished like a Saddam Hussein palace, discussing politics with prominent politicians. The next day I would be in some village hut in the middle of nowhere drinking tea in some guys kitchen with chickens running around the room.

Just from one example you came to that conclusion regarding the mass?

Where did I say or imply anything about the mass ?

Did you notice the question mark at the end of my sentence ?

I asked why there seemed to be a lack of tolerance where Taslima Nasreen was concerned, to which Kafirist gave an explanation.

I was born in Leeds but raised in Canada and then moved to the states where I met a Bangladeshi girl in University. I married her (never became Muslim) and then she took me and our daughter to visit the family and friends. Being newly married was one of the reasons for all the banquets. She has a lot of uncles and they all had to throw their own party for us. We went to Dhaka, Chittagong, Feni, Comilla, Cox's Bazaar and a few villages whose name I can't remember.

    Nice!

Yeah, that makes sense now considering the marriage and what not. You been to some seriously hardcore places ther bro. My mum's from Chittagong, spent a lot of childhood summers there - love that place.

They love it whenever foreigners or even foreign-born bengalis visit. Its like a party and feaste everyday.

You people are really making me interested in checking out Bangladesh for myself...  Might be poor but it seems like the folks over there are quite endearing..

Well as long as you know someone. Going there by your lonesome might suck.

But yeah, the people there are extremely hospitable.

Back to my trip to Bangladesh

Dhaka airport was exciting. We were allowed to bring two 70 lb suitcases per person. Bangladeshis never travel underweight. Every Bangladeshi in Connecticut had given us something to deliver there. There were five of us. Me, my in-laws, the wife and my 3-year old daughter. That?s 700 lbs of luggage and I was the only one strong enough to move a 70 lb bag. The airport was hot and stuffy but somehow I managed to keep breathing while I collected all the bags and made it towards the crowd for customs (note: I said crowd, not line). We had a relative who works at the airport who was going to expedite our checkout, but he showed up 45 minutes late. When he called for us we were already buried deep into the crowd with our 10 bags. It was surprisingly easy to make it out of the crowd. When you are a white dot in a sea of brown, everyone sees you coming. So we get through customs really fast and on the other side we get swarmed by relatives. A bunch of guys start grabbing our luggage. I don't know who the hell they are. Some of them start arguing over the bags with each other. I'm trying to keep track of all ten bags but I can't and some people are walking away with them.  I managed to hold onto one bag and stayed really close to another guy who had another bag. He's moving really fast through the airport but I stuck with him. My wife and in-laws are busy hugging everybody and they're not paying attention to me. I got separated from them but I wasn't going to lose the 2 bags in my sight. Eventually we made it out of the airport and into the parking lot, past the crowd of airport exit beggars where a convoy of vans and SUVs was waiting. I was relieved to see the guy I was with put his bag into a van. Then he just stood there and smiled at me. I didn't have any cash to give him other than the thousands of dollars in my money belt, so I waited for my wife to arrive and asked her for money to tip the guy. She then told me that it wasn't necessary to tip my cousin-in-law.

Wow you got the full Dhaka International Airport experience. Didn't you get mobbed by the hordes of beggars the moment you exited the airport shouting "American Dollar please! Singapore Dollar please!"??

I just realized, I may have given the wrong impression with that first pic. That is my wife, but the picture was taken 17 years before I met her. I am going to pretend now like you are interested in seeing my family and not just want to check out my wife. Here is a more recent picture of us.

Yes, I did get mobbed. I would have given some money at the time but I was afraid if I gave some to one then I would have been even more mobbed. I really only had one opportunity (other than eid) during my trip to give a little girl some money when no one else was watching. I gave her a 1000 taka note and she looked at me like "what the hell is this?"

    Hey Q!

Can't really argue with you there.

However, the Connecticut I live in is not the stereotypical Connecticut. I live in a working/middleclass town, where even Santa is not safe.
