Nice family Bob. Is your wife an ex-Muslim?

She will never say she is an ex-muslim, but she is. Religion has never been a big part of her life. I only saw her pray once and that was during the trip from Dhaka to Cox's Bazaar when we barely missed a head on collision with a bus.

    Hey Q!

Can't really argue with you there.

However, the Connecticut I live in is not the stereotypical Connecticut. I live in a working/middleclass town, where even Santa is not safe.

Danbury-- holy fuck! Yeah, I know your town. I lived in CT for 2-3 years and worked all over the state. Danbury was one of my regular spots and I still make it up there for work every now and then. In fact, there's a good possibility I'll be there tomorrow afternoon.

    fuck you

I understand. Well she has to be pretty liberal if she married someone who wasn't a Muslim from the start. Or am I wrong here?

Will do. I'll know by this evening or tomorrow morning and I'll drop ya a PM. It's one of those things where it could get canceled at the last minute. I'll explain more over the beer if I make it up.

Yes she's pretty liberal. I was never a Muslim, but there was a failed effort instigated by her parents to get me to convert before the marriage.

Haha, I love those half-hearted attempts at conversion by the parents when neither of the actual couple really give a damn.

I noticed for most bengali muslim + non-muslim marriages they usually get the non-muslim to 'formally' convert. But really do it for show.

I would never convert unless I really meant it. If I had become a real Muslim then that would have back-fired on them big time. I'd have to insist that my father-in-law quit his job selling pork products (pizza) to the Kufar. I'd bitch about none of the women wearing hijabs and the men only going to Mosque once a year. Ultimately, I'd have to divorce my liberal minded wife for not being Muslim enough. They are quite lucky I didn't take them up on it.

Your father-in-law manufactures pork products in Bangladesh?  Who eats them?  On a separate note I wonder if there is a way of killing a pig in an halal fashion,or doesnt it matter how this dirty animal is slaughtered?

My in-laws live 5 minutes away from us in Connecticut. We would move farther away but they would just follow us.

that must be awful living 5 mins from your in-laws - do you get on with them, or do they always give sly digs about how perfect their daughter is and how your not good enough?

My father-in-law is a work-a-holic and doesn?t have much time or interest in religion.
I think my mother-in-law (who does pray five times a day) probably has a rudimentary understanding of her religion. She knows how to pray (to keep the devil at bay) but has never really studied Islam. There is only one enthusiastic Muslim in the family and that is my cousin-in-law from New York City. She dove into Islam after her husband dumped her. She got into a big fight with my wife once over a girl who got gang-raped in Saudi Arabia. She had the opinion that it was the girl?s fault and I guess my wife took offense to that. She's always polite to me. I only see her twice a year and I try and avoid debating with her. I do politely disagree sometimes when she talks about Islam. She can't get too mad at me because I'm her ride home. Everyone else is afraid to drive in New York City. I have yet to address the haramness of her and I being alone in the car for the ride. Fortunately I am able to control my lust because she wears the hijab.

    @Rashna

Yes, I get that you sort of have a view of Bangladeshis as the Mexicans of India. But frankly I don't really know or care of that issue myself. I'm not particularly well-read or experienced about the cross-border migration issues with those two countries. And if you have an axe to grind about that issue take it up with the BD gov't. I have no horse in that race. And yes, India is a far wealthier and advanced nation than Bangladesh and naturally lots of people will migrate there for better oppurtunties.

But my point was the general issues of poverty and slums and lack of literacy and bad infrastructure are common to all third world countries in South Asia and Sout east asia whether they are muslim or not. And trying to link that with Islam as kawaii did is frankly an astoundingly ignorant and un-backed claim. Islam is not the root of all evil, at least not in Bangladesh.

Well, India is a lot poorer than USA, it really can't afford to feed that many more people, it can hardly feed its own people. Also, Bangladesh isn't even officially a secular nation, it dropped the term "secular" from its Constitution around the 70's.

World renowned historian Will Durant"...the Islamic conquest of India is probably the bloodiest story in history. It is a discouraging tale, for its evident moral is that civilization is a precious good, whose delicate complex order and freedom can at any moment be overthrown..."

Yes, but it cant be compared with secular India with Islamic ruling history, and more than 20% of the population who are non-Hindu.  Bangladesh was formed on religious grounds and has more than 90% that are Muslim.  I can forgive it for dropping the title secular, it makes little difference in real terms.

Well Islame Bangladesh's original constitution was Secular and it was founded as a Secular country. But it was the right wing Islamist party that changed the constitution in '72.

While it isn't officially secular. There is no official precedence given to actual islamic theology in the political and legal sphere. For example the whole Taslima Nasreen situation is not based on her being blasphemous as far as the legal case against her is concerned. It based on her causing civil unrest and fomenting religious feelings.

Sure, in practical terms it's still stifling free speech, but there is no sharia-type laws. Or at least I think there wasn't.

I have a pretty deep hate for Islam because of what has happened to our dear constitution of Bangladesh. It's the reason why Bangladesh isn't progressing--and it has an immense amount of potential.

Fuck Islam to the highest fucking degree.

There appears to be a fairly strong atheist bangladeshi community on Scribd http://www.scribd.com/rongon_physio (take a look at his friends) where I store my blog.  We need to find a way of uniting all these disparate ex-muslim groups and bringing them over here as an already established and unique type of site for people like them!
