    I would blame dear Zulfi Bhutto for starting the Islamist shit.

    First, he refused to accept Sheikh Mujib as the legitimate Prime Minister of both East & West Pakistan after the Awami League won the majority seats (and hence the right to form a government) fair and square in the 1970 elections that would have actually ushered in a new era for a united Pakistan, but instead led to the 1971 war and eventual independence of Bangladesh. All because Bhutto didnt want to accept a Bengali as a Prime Minister.  finmad

    Then he put in all sorts of Islamised laws in an otherwise quasi-secular 1973 constitution. It was in the 1970s when the sale of alcohol and gambling etc was officially banned in Pakistan for the first time, and the tiny Ahmediyya Muslim sect was declared non-Muslim to top it during Bhutto's reign of lunacy.

    All that by Bhutto because he had to appease his 'allies' in the Jamaat-e-Islami and Jamiat Ulema Pakistan. Bear in mind, the PPP didnt even win a clear majority in West Pakistan during the 1970 elections and Bhutto had to form a coalition government in what was left of Pakistan in 1972.

    Zia merely continued (with full force) what Bhutto started.

    Zia's funding of Madrasas was bound to end in tears when you have backward uneducated Afghan women beaters, and you tell them what they are doing ie women beating and blowing shit it for no reason is divinely ordained it is going to end badly, the Afghan pathans need to be kicked out of Pakistan, they will never assimilate, unless they are sent forcibly to re-education camps or something If I was a dictator, I would have put a limit on the breeding they could do, if they did not send children to a secular school

    How can the Afghan pathans be kicked out of Pakistan when they constitute part of its ethnic components and the North West Frontier which is part of Pakistan is the ancestral home of pathans? Might want to think of a different way of dealing with things than kicking millions of people out of their own country.

    Anyway, this thread has been interesting. It was always my impression that Bangladesh was in so many ways less hardcore in terms of its Islamic interpretations than Pakistan. Would it be true to say that alot of the recent rise in bellicosity has been caused by Saudi influence?

    Saudis are 101% behind pretty much every vestige of fundementalism and literalism in the country. Sharia law is unheard of in Bangla history, our people naturally range from Sufi to normal Sunni. The Saudis finance countless madrassas, islamist groups and other institutes. Its a give and take since they also provide lots of aid to the country.

    Actually the Seraiki people from south Punjab (Multan, Bahawalpur, D.G.Khan, Bhakkar, Khanewal etc) are no exceptions to the rule and a lot of them have been Wahhabised.

    being a average bengali myself i dont see how we are in ANY way strick about tradition or religion then indians or pakistanis, especially in religion. I dont see what your moaning about. seriously if you dont like Bangladesh why not gtfo? Im pretty sure peole in pakistan are wayy peace-loving and open minded then bengalis, after all its been ranked as the most dangerous country in the world lipsrsealed. also you cant group an entire polupation for being the same, everyone's different.

    For Bengalis in Bangladesh in the high rising flats of Dhaka, I agree with you.

    But for Bengalis living in the Tower Hamlets of London, I know many religious ones who:
    - live off benefits
    - send their kids to madrassas, instead of Uni when they have the hard working ability
    - don't like to integrate
    - despise English people

    This is from personal experience. Perhaps it happens with Pakistani's too, in somewhere like Bradford, but I don't really see the same with the Indians. Difference? I think it's Islam.

    It's not good to generalize, but it's also bad not to provide any information for a discussion to occur.

    It's weird, but I think Bangladeshis in the west that live in ethnic ghettoes tend to become waaaay more religious than their homeland counterparts. I can't tell why that is, especially in the UK. But yes, Islam is the difference. Because Hindu Bengalis are quite well to do.

    Our family, while Muslim, are quite educated and ecclectic. We have lots of Hindu Bangladeshi and Indian Bengali friends. And we can see the clear differences between a Muslim dinner party and a Hindu one. A Hindu dinner party is tits, its class. There's beer, wine, and the people invited are quite diverse - not just Indian. It's typical to see at a Hindu Bengali party other races like white people or other indians and asians. A Muslim Bengali party is boring as fuck. Homogenous, highly formal, no alchohol obviously and largely involes aunties gossiping and uncles discussing how the Zionist CIA were behind 9/11.  Tongue

    +1 about the western ghettos. By the by: same thing with Turks living in German ghettos to Turks back home.

    Nice to hear that your family relate to Hindu Bengalis. Mine don't and never will. Even in Sylhet a Hindu is looked down upon by the Muslims. Oh well.

    Why don't they integrate? I can never work out why Muslims seem to erect the metaphorical 'piss off kafir' sign and yet whine when they don't feel wanted or there are racist reflex action by the 'peasants with pitchforks'. I remember when I was Australia, Muslims would never say whether or not they're coming if you invited them over - how the fuck is someone supposed to organise a fucking dinner party? and Jesus Christ, the fucking pickiness. Sure, I can understand - no pork, but come on, does it actually matter one fucking bit if the cow, sheep or deer was facing a concrete block in the middle of the desert whilst some voodoo magic was conducted?

    I really don't know. From my experience I think Muslims deep down feel intimidated by westerners and the freedom present, especially when it comes to the sexes. You have to realise all the hatred and "kafir" shit is a symptom of deeper fears. In turn the veneer of Muslim intimidation further fuels western/white fears causing this endless cycles of mutual suspicion. A suspicion not really present among other minorities and their relations to whites.

    My personal theory is that all this ghettoization bs is fueled by insecure Muslim men who fear the loss of control over their daughters and wives if they mix too freely with westerners. Islam provides a perfect rationale to continue that control with divine ordainment. That' my 2c. Not sure if it's accurate.

    I don't have any experience with Muslim Bengali dinner parties or anything, but I can add one thing. I do not want to generalize, but I can see clear differences between Hindu's in my University (mainly from Sri Lanka and india) and Muslims from India/Pakistan etc. From my experience, the Hindu's integrate a lot better. They befriend people from all religious background, even gay people. They dress western, and even though they don't celebrate Christmas religiously, they chill with people and have a type of christmas party, having some beer and overall having a great time. Muslims on the other hand are different. They don't wish people merry christmas or a diwali, they don't usually befriend non muslims, their parties are boring (with exception of food) all they do is read Qur'an, talk about religion and pray afterwards, not much of a party. They also do not integrate. Again, this is my experience from University. Overall, I say that Hindu's integrate better, and the same goes with Sikhs. Also, atleast Hindu's do not have any Dawah tables handing out CD's and booklets. They keep their beliefs to themself, same with Sikhs.

    Pretty much spot on. You're canadian so your and my campus experience is pretty much same.

    Of course I would say you have to separate the Muslims "by name" ones from the rest. They are no different at integrating than any other kuffar.

    Yes and no. The ones that came to the UK are basically labour class - some who were working the tea plantation a generation ago.

    You are right. But when I say Muslim, I mean ones who practice. Most Muslims in my campus take their religion seriously. Not many are just Muslim by name from my experience. But honestly, why is it so hard for them to wish people a merry Christmas/Diwali/hanukkah? We wish them Eid Mubarak and wish them a good Ramadan but they can't do the same with us.

    Hmm, what university is this? I find university tends to really be ground zero, or like a fork in the road when it comes to young muslims becoming religious. The Muslim social groups are so strong there that they capture every young muslim guy that comes in and very few gets through the net. This is also a time when lots of newly graduated muslim kids (including myself once!) suffer a sort of identity crisis as they come of age. It's hard for a Muslim to square his religion with western culture - and campus demagogues and dawaists present an 'or/else' choice to these young guys: be part of the brotherhood and accept our ideas, or be alone. So really, these young guys are the worst out of any muslims. I see older practicing muslims saying merry christmas all the time in my office and my mom/dad/sis are the first to say it as am I.
