  • How will you spend Ramadan?
     OP - August 10, 2009, 09:40 PM

Usually I do not care about ramadan, I never fast nor pray. But I'll be spending the majority of ramadan in a muslim country, so I'll have to fast and/or pray. I'll of course try to avoid it as much as possible, but totally avoiding it will be difficult. Of course I'll eat every time I know no one is watching.  grin12

I can't wait for it to be over, and it has not even began.

I might fast a few days, just cuz it makes the iftar more enjoyable. Free delicious food Afro. Fuck tarawih tho.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

I wont be participating in it nor will I be forced to since my family is well aware of my religious views. During Eid though, I'll hang with the fam. and friends.  grin12

I have no idea what to do ...
This will be my first Ramadan as a ex muslim but i don't want to hurt my family and they'll expect me to fast, recite qu'ran and be as faithful as they are :S

    I don't really have a choice... -_-"
I don't have to pray (never have done it actually), but fasting during ramadan is a must.
I'm going to start the first month at college (or high school as they say in Britain xD) with a smelly breath, yaay... -_-"

Why, Farid? You telling me there's no part of the day you can sneak some food and drink?

As far as the smelly breath goes, gargling mouthwash isn't haraam, is it? I mean, as long as you spit it out.

There is... But the only way to get food is by buying it.
And my parents still check my bank statements because they're afraid I'm going to buy smokes/drugs like 70% of the teenage boys in this area... xD
There's a HUGE part of me that just wants to come out... I don't care how they'll react... =/
But I somehow think it's best to play along for just a little bit longer... xD

Bum some food off your non-Muslim friends. If you don't have any non-Muslim friends, make some-- and if your current non-Muslim friends won't give you a bag of chips during Ramadan, then they're sucky friends, ditch em and find some new ones. Also, you can whore yourself out to chicks who can pay you in candy bars, potato chips and soda.

    fuck you

I live with the family so I'm gonna have to wake up for sehri and pretend that I'm fasting throughout the day.  Pretending to pray is annoying too.

When I'm on my lunchbreak at work I'm gonna be constantly looking over my shoulder when I sneak into the shop to buy my lunch, and then I'll find a secluded spot to eat it in.

I actually keep some of the "fasts" and refrain from eating throughout the day.  Depends on the mood I guess.

    Lol
    Seconded.

My friends would give me food but my college is packed out with nosy and bitchy Somalis. They'd be flying like a bat out of hell to tell what they saw tbh

    Safer to fast i think

Have one of your closer friends pass you an apple or somethin on the down low, so nobody else sees it, then eat it in the bathroom stall or some other area out of sight of other people. If kids can get away with smoking, buying and using drugs in grade school without it getting back to their parents, then if you're careful and creative, I'm sure you can score a candy bar on the qt.

Then again, my natural evilness and desire to take people to the dark side may be manifesting itself, so maybe you shouldn't take my advice.

    fuck you

    I'll try it.

I'm not too concerned about fasting.
It is the praying non stop for hours and reading the Qu'ran i am annoyed about. My Mom sees ramadan as an opportunity to "show me the light" and the pressure from my family will be amped up. They see this as a test and so do I so it does not bode well

I respect Eid a lot. I don't see it as a 'religious' thing. To me, it's more of a cultural thing. Personally speaking, I see Eid as an event where people from different cultures can come together and celebrate. I admire the 'unity' that  the day represents. It's too bad that the very next day though, everyone goes back to their original racial biases, and continues to be distant from one another.

This will be my first Ramadan as an open ex-Muslim so...I guess I'm just going to refrain from eating in front of my family and I'll help make iftar since I'm not fasting it's only fair.

I will be eating, and partying, and drinking, and having lots of sex lol ramadan barely crosses my mind, the only reason I am aware of it is because my brother complained that all his friends had stopped drinking alcohol 40days before ramadan, so I told him to hang with his non muslim friends instead lol and of course I get immense pleasure from knowing my siblings and awful parents have to fast when the sun doesn't set for ages.  haha bastards, I hope they suffer.  Tongue

I will be fake fasting, as in, pretending to fast most days and eating all the while, or drinking or something else that nullifies the fast....... Cheesy

Anyway, I might tell my mum I don't want to fast but I don't like the look of fucking dissappointment on her face, she's also very good as most parents are at emotional blackmail.

    This is bullshit.

Tell me about it! That's exactly what my mum's like, the disappointed look on her face and the emotional blackmails.

I won't be telling my parents about not fasting, I wont be praying but will have to fake fast.

I'm glad this post was made about ramadan, you see on islamic forums (well one i've been on before) how they are supportive of each other during this month, talking about brotherhood and sisterhood and what not. It is particularly difficult month on some of us too, so it's nice to have these forums to be able to talk to another who's in a similar situation. I empathise with you.

I love Eid, it is my equivalent of Christmas. Meeting family i haven't seen in months and greeting friends, catching up etc.

I have noticed that as well.
Very rarely do Africans, Arabs, Asians pray in the same Mosque. [Do you notice they each have their 'own' Mosque]
But on Eid it doesn't matter, people are greeting complete strangers who are Muslims in the streets. Its quite lovely.

It is a shame it happens only in those 24 hours

Now that you bring it up, yeah I have noticed that. It really is sad, especially since Muslims talk about how 'unified' Muslims are (Ummah)

Meh, those Muslims who claim unity are fooling themselves.

Yep, when dogmatic belief is lauded in the islamic community, then there is always going to be division with no compromise.  I predict even more sects in Islam than in Christianity, as each rival faction divides itself off.

The latest group i have heard is 'submission' http://www.submitters.org.uk/, and I can see this growing into much greater prominences as time goes by.  They are quran-only and I have mentioned them before with regards to the mathematical miracles.
