Hey, I had a thought, did mo know about more hours of daylight at the northern/southern hemispheres, because at the equator the length of the day doesn't change (or not much, im no astronomer). Or did he just not care? about people having to starve for so long?

Hey this bloke was into torturing people with flints, paedophilia & murder and you wonder if he was bothered about someone in the northern hemishphere not eating for a few extra hours?

That's one of the big flaws in Islam as a religion for all mankind.  What are Eskimos supposed to do during ramadhan?  Starve for six months?

I was thinking maybe there was some rule (of the many) that i missed about excusing one if they couldnt manage it in the southern/northern hemispheres

Dunno stardust, I don't think Mo was a deep thinker, he was too busy thinking about which slave girl to shag

Todays Muslims have made up numerous rules to overcome this blunder.

But it doesn't change the fact that Muhammad in his "divine" wisdom committed this blunder in the first place.

Hmm, will they never change? it's seems similar to christianity, something sounds dodgy and they try to fudge it with many excuses and stories.
I don't understand how so many (all the muslims out there) don't see/get it?
I'm happy this site exists Smiley I think islam can be reformed as christianity was.

Fethullah Gulen's response to the question about extreme polar regions:

"This objection has often been raised by anti-religious and atheistic people to question the universality of Islam. .....................................

But what percentage of the world's population actually live in the extreme polar regions? Can it be right to criticise Islam for failing to be practicable by, at most, one-fifth of one percent of the population of the world? The norms and the rules of Islam are practicable by the overwhelming majority of mankind: that is a justifiable ground for claiming unversality for these norms and rules. To use the extreme, exceptional case to criticise the rule instead of understanding that the exception proves the rule, shows that those who raise these doubts do so out of motives which cannot be reconciled with either sincerity or a truly scientific curiosity."

So basically, this is a stupid question only asked by insincere people who have an agenda against Islam.

But even if only one person in the whole world was living in the extreme polar regions of the world, that one person would deem the universality of Islam to be flawed.

It's silly though hurling things like 'no sincerity or truely scientific curiosity'

It's not just about the extreme poles, the daylight hours even here or a bit further north can become so long, it can't be healthy. I'm sure there are many who will suffer from dehydration. If someone's working long hours/evening shifts, work will become really strenuous.
Plus this is only one case, you can pile it up with all the other flaws of islam. It's not like if they fudge their way out of this one, then they're home free.

And I'm sure the starving people would think we are mocking them....when we have so much food and just starving ourselves for the sake of it to know 'what it feels like' when we can't really because they don't have it in their minds that at the end of the day they will be able to eat and fill their tummies, or ease of mind from knowing that. They would probably rather we do something about it than giving them the 'i feel for you' 'poor you' and sitting comfortably at home.

The above is a non-answer.  He starts off with a strawman - it only applies to the extreme polar regions, which as Stardust points out is not true.  He follows with a lie - if its the majority, its universal.   Roll Eyes  He follows it up by an unsupported assertion that the exception proves the rule in this case - er, how?  Then he finishes by insulting the integrity of those who ask the question.

Because the climate and daylight/darkess is out of our control, Muslims have no option but to accept this situation and slightly bend the rules of Islam to gloss over this blunder.  They can't exactly say that the climate is being "Islamophobic" and discriminating against Muslims who want to fast can they?

Make no mistake though, if the climate was under our control, then I can assure you that many Muslims would demand that the climate should be changed to suit Islam.

Any kind of reformation would have to coincide with a more general scientific renaissance. I can't see that happening because of Islam so it's a catch 22

Never mind the polar regions. I had 50 years of fasting in the UK and fasting in summer in London UK is a loooooooong day - much longer than any sane human being should be fasting for a month.

Mo obviously didn't think about a London sprawl 1400 years in the future - shame really, coz Allah should have warned him about it.

I agree with you. I think Islam will reform or modernise or whatever...

Like Christianity to most Christians it will become a quaint but irrelevant cultural relic that provides some vague comfort and point of reference.

That's fine for most people who still need their comfort blanket - and it doesn't hurt anyone.

I hope I can tell my family i'm (an agnostic?) developing my own idea of who and what god is, definitely not allah, before fasting month moves to the mid summer. I guess you managed to keep the fast during those times?

I agree, people need to start looking at islam with a skeptical eye. A measure of how good something is seeing how it holds with criticism. And people are doing that, this forum, maryham, Ibn warraq... shows evidence of this. That is how christianity was reformed by starting with the voices of a few (actually i'm not sure, but it's a good assumption Smiley).

In fairness though most people are homophobic, end of.

And homosexuality is only actually tolerated in a few select Western cultures, all non-Western and some Western cultures take a similarly closed view of it.

    Muslims included.

"I am ready to make my confession. I ask for no forgiveness father, for I have not sinned. I have only done what I needed to do to survive. I did not ask for the life that I was given, but it was given nonetheless-and with it, I did my best"

The concept of a gay identity complete with lifestyle is a very modern western idea. Other cultures are more tolerant of man sex but not a gay identity
