  • Live & work in the U.K. for a month
     OP - August 11, 2009, 10:30 PM

So I've been thinking about what I should do next summer (yes this early xD)...
I thought it might be fun to rent a cheap apartment somewhere in London or Manchester (I'm a huge Man Utd supporter xD) and then find a small part time job to pay for it.
It should be a huge adventure... xD

I guess it shouldn't be a problem since I have the Dutch nationality and both the U.K. and the Netherlands are part of the European Union.
But are there things I should know about "living" in the U.K?
    Any tips?

    Living in London?

    Avoid Chavs.

You shall survive if you heed that advice

Do you know where? How much a apartment will cost or a job set out?
Coming UK will be no problem seeing you are in EU.

Depends on where in London he will live.

    South or North for example.

In London, avoid the East and the South, and the West and the North, come to think of it, don't go anywhere within the m25-just stay out of London.

No, actually, that is good advice. I advise you to live somewhere else. London rents are ridiculously expensive and London can be really difficult (crime, fast pace, the system, transport etc) for even the smartest Brit, I think a foreigner would find it very very difficult.

Manchester isn't bad, rents aren't too bad and job prospects aren't the worst-especially if you live in a studenty area near the centre. Crime isn't too high and you can avoid the silly oppurtunist burglaries if you're careful (most British students are stupid when it comes to locking windows etc).

    Not a bad plan.

I wish you good luck although I suggest you do all the planning you can before coming. It's not easy moving to a new place even for a month.

May be expensive but lets face it London is the best city in UK for its history.

I can probably waste a page on all the things you can do in London.

London is an interesting place to live, but found it has its time & place and the novelty can wear off if you want a little more space and less stress.

The BBC are moving to Manchester, along with a number of affiliated industries, so its a good time to move down.

They tried to do a copycat cat congestion charging scheme, but the people voted 80:20 against it, so you can still happily drive around if you have a car

Rents are quite high in the centre so you might want to live a little further out, but they have built a metro system so you could live near to one of the stops and have a direct link into the city centre.

Let me know if you decide to come here, and I will try my best to help.

I suppose a month is doable but he better come with savings, I work in central London and that is bloody expensive

Spends so much on rent it is ridiculous.

The university I went to was in a small mostly unheard of town. The campus was built on park land with massive fields and hedgerows, and the fields were teeming with lots and lots and lots of wild bunny wabbits!

They were nice, untill myximatosis broke out among them and they all went blind with huge swollen red eyes.
    Poor bunnehs :(.

As for wanting to live in London for a month and work ... You might want to realise that it could take several months to actually find a job in the UK.

We keep hearing about how Jack Straw or the French government have mentioned the veil and our doing so puts us in the same boat as them. How so? I want a ban on the burka, neqab and child veiling.

Shockingly enough I found drinking in soho last night to be much much cheaper than drinking in surrey, which is where I live. I always assumed it was the other way round.

Then again, in comparison to drinking up north, it was expensive lol because up north is way way cheaper.

If you did choose to come to london Farid, you really shouldn't try to rent in central london because it's sky high prices, the outskirts of london are cheaper, and I'm talking the outskirts that no longer include NW, SW, SE, NE, or basically any type of direction in the postcode because they all suck.

You should also be careful about the visa restrictions.

I'm not sure if, as an EU citizen, you can work without restrictions, so ignore that if there are no restrictions.

Just gotta be careful not to break any immigration rules, or it could be quite damaging.

    Thanks for replying everyone!
Just looked at the map of London on Google Maps...
    London looks so weird... xD
I think I'll need a navigation system... xD

"As for wanting to live in London for a month and work ... You might want to realise that it could take several months to actually find a job in the UK."
Yeah I think that's the toughest part...
I can't imagine a company hiring someone knowing he won't be staying longer than a month... xD
I don't mind taking a little bit money with me so that I already have like 50% of what I need.

"and I'm talking the outskirts that no longer include NW, SW, SE, NE, or basically any type of direction in the postcode because they all suck."
I actually found a small house in Acton (W3) which is pretty close to the center for 130 pounds a week.
It'll be 281,5 pound per person for the whole month if I can drag a friend with me... xD

"You should also be careful about the visa restrictions. "
I'm pretty sure it's legal. But I'm still going to ask it at the British consulate here, just to make sure... ^^

"Is that the same for British Citizens working anywhere in Europe? That will make things very easy for me!"
The Dutch government is actually in a dilemma right now.
People from Poland take away a lot of Jobs here (they are cheaper) and spend all the money they earned in Poland.
But it's impossible to keep them out because they are European citizens...

Rough area hence the affordable price.

Still though, it's an experience, I have a friend who lives over there, we actually left her house yesterday in acton, to head out for drinks so it's not all bad.

I just wouldn't live there lol but then again I've already lived near there, so I have done it, you have yet to do it.

So go for it, just avoid the lowlifes who actually live around there, because there are plenty of them.

I'm a first year Mediatechnology student.
Anything that has to do with computers or the internet is fine with me... xD
I was webdeveloper for a small company that got bankrupt like a month ago... -_-"
I often worked a few hours for that company when I was on vacation to Belgium, Germany or even Morocco.
So I can easily find job here in Holland and work in the U.K....
But I want to improve my English skills as well (I have a HUGE accent xD)...
