  • Do you wish you were born into a secular family?

    I sometimes wished that I was born into a family that were already secular humanists or even socialists. At least you wouldn't have to go through any silly exercises in leaving Islam. I have been to homes where the obsession with religion has reached some dizzy heights especially the ahl-e-hadith folk. Talk about being literal!

    Well the struggle to leave religion has been most....illuminating. But leaving Islam is  a fuckload of trouble. I wish I was born into a (non-religious) Christian or Jewish family, it would be far easier. I mean, I do live under a fairly non-religious Muslim house, but it's still far more trouble than it's worth announcing apostasy. Many of my friends from a similar albeit Christian background can scream under the stars about how God isn't real.

    Difficult one to answer.  Would life have been as rich and interesting if I had only personally experienced one culture?  I like to think I have the best of both worlds now, and will be able to pass that onto my progeny.

    Fingers crossed this way I wont end up in an old persons home.

    I think most of this has to do with the fact that we are about 500 years behind the christians in terms of a reformation. They have had to endure all this that most ex-muslims are going through and worse. Also their clerics have nothing left really to do except the usual ritual stuff or to try and square the circle with scientific discoveries. I think it is also because muslims generally tend to be so sure of themselves and reckon that their scriptures are watertight.

    I wouldn't say 500 years behind the Christians, I would say 300 years behind in terms of the enlightenment. Apart from in England, the Protestant Reformation was a super-religious, fundamentalist movement.

    There's an old proverb that says you can't choose your family. You take what fate hands you. And like them or not, love them or not, understand them or not, you cope.

    I'll cope with my family, i love them for who they are not what i wish they were.

    True, but when most people apostate that feeling isn't reciprocated.

    When I was younger, I definitely felt that way. I was angry that I was by birth relegated to being less free, having fewer options in life than my friends from non religious families (especially as a female). But as I got older, I've made my peace with things a lot more. I accept that I am who I am because of where I was. And if I like who I am now (which I do, most of the time), then I have to give some credit to even to those parts of my past that I hated and wouldn't wish upon anyone. If I had been raised in a more secular environment, I may not appreciate the freedoms that I have fought to have in my life. If I had been raised in a more religious environment, I'd probably be dead.  wacko

    That is true and i know my family would reject me if they knew but some may call me stupid but i love them despite that.

    Nothing has changed in terms of my feelings towards my family. It's a selection process I guess. One has to be a good judge of character in order to divulge to the right people. I think Tariq Ali the Pakistani bolshevik had it easy having a non-religious secular family.

    Not just your family, remember society had a lot to do with that too.  Sadly I am sure their visions of how you would turn out are far from what you are today.

    Oh my Muslim friends completley flipped

    I was born into a secular family, but thank god i wasn't born into a socialist one.

    My family were secular.

    The thing I regret most is getting into religion myself, when I didn't have to. I feel bad for my kids more than anything as they have to now deal with all that Islamic baggage. I didn't have to do that to them. If I could turn the clock back I would take a wide detour round Islam and my kids would have grown up in happy ignorance of it - apart from a few relatives off in the distance who did quaint things like fasting & praying.

    Though it would have meant not marrying the Muslim wives I did and not having the beautiful kids I have - and I would never want to change that.

    because they are devout Muslim.

    Secular doesn't mean atheist
    Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.

    I've to disagree. Christianity could also be tightly bound to extended family traditions.  

    It's only that, in the West it is not, except maybe in the US bible belt. I believe that even orthodox Jews might have the same problem.

    As an ex-christian, I still haven't declared my apostasy.

    Indeed!

    Many honour killings are done by "secular" families. Dads, Uncles and extended family who are not outwardly religious and quite secular - but closely tied both emotionally and culturally to Islam where they see their identity and honour.
