I was judging by my own family. I guess it was an unfair generalisation but I keep hearing from everybody else that Mirpur is more backwards then the rest of Pakistan.

It's alright. Mirpuri's do get a bad name unfortunately. Whatever faults they have, they tend to be humble and very hospitable people.

I was also interested to learn on a recent doc on conspiracy theories on 7/7 the leading moderate muslim leader i think it was in Birmingham?...thinks the government here have it in for muslims and were infact behind the bombings.

Dr Naseem of the Birmingham Central mosque. He is deluded. When that martyrdom video of Mohammed Sidique Khan came out, he said it was a fake!

    +1

I'm offended. I'm married to my first cousin and my kids are extremely intelligent. I have friends who are married to first cousins and have intelligent children with nothing wrong with them whatsoever.

    aliadiere, 20yearstoolong and hassan,

I am sorry you guys got offended by my post the other day. It was not a personal attack on anyone. May be I should not have mentioned cousin marriages. May be I should have understood that many people on this forum were married to their cousins. Please forgive me for my harsh words.

However, I do stand by the points I made in my post earlier on this thread. I am also, like many of you, from Pakistan. Along with the religion, I do see deep flaws in culture as well. Any cultural practices which cause unnecessary problems and becomes a hurdle in personal or communal development should be picked up...... by smart people.

Being poor 60 years ago is a different thing and staying backward, while having financial security and access to education, is entirely a different case.

What I objected to was you said that people in the UK had reduced brain sizes because of inbreeding! You can't just make a statement like that without any evidence, and without any scientific evidence that inbreeding causes offspring to have smaller brains!

If you google with search words inbreeding and intellegence, you can find many medical research papers and journals. You need to purchase them for full access. However, the overall results are indicated.

I think for the most part its seen as more healthy for a human population to not in breed too much as it can cause what is called inbreeding depression (results in more recessive deleterious traits manifesting themselves) To cure this introducing new genes from a different population can reverse inbreeding depression as new genes are introduced.

Some examples inculde (these are extreme cases where the population have been cut off)

The Vadoma tribe of western Zimbabwe, many of whom carry the trait of having only two toes due to a small gene pool.

The Ulas family of southern Turkey have several members who walk on all fours, due to mental retardation caused by inbreeding.
