     OP - August 25, 2009, 09:09 PM

Guy's have any of you seen this debate. I like Dan Barker and he's probably doing a better job than Dawkins. Harris and Hitchens because he comes from a theological background.

    Okay, now he gets annoying.

Its just gapfilling... he only tells over and over again that, the parts in the universe you dont understand? THATS GOD!!!

He is a typical Gap filler... sheesh

edit: Deer god this guy is so stupid... I am here so god exists?! THATS hes argument?
because he is so complex, god MUST exist?! WTH? Science explains perfectly well how we came to be WITHOUT CREATION!!... man... long time since i got frustrated about a debate.

and yes... he gets friggin emotianal

edit2: Dan Barker on the other hand is brilliant...

He is getting emotional, and preaching :S

He is babbling 'The relative world cannot exist without an absolute creator' o.o...

Edit: this reminds me of a book i started reading called 'The thinker's guide to God' I can't remember the details, but it aruged about people's definition of God, I'll try and find that book.

Edit: OMG is this guy serious?! Only God can give us morality?! ONLY GOD?!
Okay, i have to go beat a nun to death on a pile of dead puppies now! Why?! because i dont believe in God...

Aaaaaand still. Life is complex so there must be a creator! *puke*

Edit2: I cant believe there are people out there who are convinced by this absolute nonsense that there is a god. I mean... really?! REALLY?!

hahaha dan - 'pretend to be intellectual'   Cheesy

Dan Barker is composed because he has nothing to feel threatened by, whereas the theist guy does, his faith is on the line.

Right, so this guy says that god is outside space and time, this is similar to St. Thomas Aquinas (Christian philosopher and theologian) and his model of god as 'Wholly Simple'

The points for this model given in 'The Thinker's Guide to God':

-God is not made up of parts

(My note - isn't the trinity made of 'parts of god'? Hmm maybe the trinity idea didn't exist then.. i don't know)

-God does not have a body

(My note - although im sure i heard that somewhere in the bible, there are indications of god having body parts? yeah apparently in genesis god walked in the garden of eden with adam)

-God is not in space and time

    -God is not immutable

    -God has no potential

    -God is necessary
(In the book this means god is not dependant on anything, nothing caused god to come into existence)

It takes Aristotle's and Plato's view of anything perfect could not exist in space and time. Also if god does not exist in time he doesn't have potential to do anything, (this is another Aristotle's idea) because if yesterday, tomorrow etc doesn't exist, time doesn't exist for god, then he has no potential to change, he is fixed.

Then god cannot be omnipotent can he? He can't intervene in this universe where time exists, how can he answer our prayers?

My thought: If god is eternal and infinite, and nothing created god, and only god was at the begining, all there is. Then for god to create us, we must be created from god in the sense we are a part of god. The whole universe is just a part of god. If nothing comes from nothing. If god has no potential, he couldn't even really create us, could he?

St. Francis took the opposite idea on it, that god is in time (makes sense since jesus as god came to earth...etc)

Anyway we can still have a look at Aquinas' view for the islamic god...

You know, the guy who introduces this event seems like a nice enough fellow.  This took place in New York City, not the West Coast.  But he's talking about 'no anger, no animosity' and so on and I'm thinking, you know, would you say the same if the atheist was someone who was raised in a Muslim family?  It's just words.  What do they say when people like Dan Barker and New York Atheists aren't around?  You know what they say - going to hell, immoral, all have gay AIDS butt sex, and so on.

Ugh and that annoying thing where, in order to start the program, someone has to recite some 'relevant' verses from the Quran in his nasally, overwrought style while the Muslims in the audience sit there smugly, sure that the kafirs among them will be converted from the sheer beauty of this book that they don't understand and the non-Muslims, and probably some of the Muslims, struggle to stay awake.

And the topi with American clothes.  I hate that look.  That is just my personal feeling.  Nothing about Islam per se, hated it when I was Muslim too.

I wonder if any Muslim there or any Muslim who has seen this since then has been prompted to think deeply about the existence of a deity, and had an introduction to reality.

Man Bakers closing statement was brilliant, the other guys... not so much. He was just saying things that would appeal to the muslim audiance.

Both debaters are fairly poor really, they get side tracked easily into other trickier areas. An atheist doesn't have to prove anything, the burden is on the believer. Intelligent design is not proof of a single all knowing, infinite diety.

Take the Pakman challenge and convince me there is a God and Mo was not a murdering, power hungry sex maniac.
