  • Allah, Mohamed & Othman?
     OP - August 28, 2009, 12:32 PM

I have been thinking lately about what would have happened to the Islamic faith if Othman the 3rd Caliph did not assemble the Quran some 15 or 20 years later after the death of Mohammed?

There is nothing in the Quran or in the Hadeath that says it is the duty of the caliph to assemble the Quranic verses together to prevent them from being lost, was there?

Maybe Hassan can make a short video demonstrating a different scenarios about what would have happened if Othman did not do what he did to save the Quran! I think that might start some people to think about the verse that says: Allah is preserving the Quran. In fact Othman is the one who saved it!

And please don't tell me that Muslims would say: it is Allah who inspired Othman to do what he did. If Allah can send some Shoohub (meteorite) from the sky, then surely he can send a scruffy old book! Thinking hard

When I think about it more, I think Islam owes a lot to Othman! Don't you think?

I can see 7 different versions of Quran if it wasn't for Othman, or maybe even no Quran whatsoever!!

If it was not for Othman, I wonder whether so many versions of the Quran would have come about, that the religion would have become nonsensical and died an early death?

Othman look what you have done!

Now we are entering the realm of speculation. I wonder if there is any coherent theory to support it. Best to check up to see if there are any hadith on this. Hassan?

Yeah, as RIBS suggested, I wonder whether Othman did more for the longevity of Islam than Mohammed?

I also wonder if Islam would have been just as misogynistic as it is if 'Umar ibn al Khattab hadn't been around to influence Big Mo and cause the verse on the hijab to come down from the Great Spirit in the Sky.

    Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

What theory? That Othman assembled the Quran? It is very well known, it is taught at Schools. Othman is the guy who made it happen. There is no question about it. Although, some say that  Abo-Baker and Omar, the 1st and 2nd Caliphs, respectively, have started it but they never finished the job.

No No! Must be misunderstood. I'm aware that Uthman was responsible for the compilation and authorisation of the Quran that we have today. What my concern is, what is to say that the final compilation we have is the one that was authorised by Uthman? We only have the accounts that are in the hadith literature that support that claim and that's what we go by on face value. There are theories to say that the Quran was probably compiled much later than what is reported. These theories are from people like John Wansborough and other Western Islamic scholars. There could have been other "versions" of the Quran with verses added or removed. But Uthman has certainly done a good job to make sure that what we have is what was revealed to Mo. The Muslims would also support their claim of authenticity by saying that there are Haafiz around the world who can trace their learning all the way back to the prophet. But how can that claim be falsified?

Does anyone know what the deal is with the Hafs and Warsh versions of the Quran. I'd really like to know.

I think they are recitation techniques if I have understood them rightly.

I've heard that it changes the meaning of the Quran, is this true?

No I don't think that is so.  Not that it matters. You can have two mullahs who are both followers of the Hafs school of recitation and they will both say that a such and such verse means two different things.  Hence diversity and 'differences of opinion is a mercy' which is bullshit and not even a hadith but something mullahs made up, in my opinion, to dampen criticism of such divergent opinions.

Uthman ibn Affan (al-Ghani) is Islam's version of the Council of Nicaea.
