"He who takes the same God as his oppressors is destined to remain a slave."

"The easy confidence with which I know another man's religion is folly teaches me to suspect that my own is also." ~Mark Twain

"Read myths. They teach you that you can turn inward, and you begin to get the message of the symbols. Read other people's myths, not those of your own religion, because you tend to interpret your own religion in terms of facts -- but if you read the other ones, you begin to get the message. Myth helps you to put your mind in touch with this experience of being alive. Myth tells you what the experience is." -Joseph Campbell

Businesses may come and go, but religion will last forever, for in no other endeavor does the consumer blame himself for product failure.  ~Harvard Lamphoon

OCEAN: A body of water occupying about two thirds of a world made for man- who has no gills." -Ambrose Bierce

" 'God' is an unelected dictator who tortures his political opponents. He possesses weapons of mass destruction and has used them against his own people."

"If God were suddenly condemned to live the life which He has inflicted upon men, He would kill Himself. "
    - Alexandre Dumas

"Religions prophesize the end of the world and then consistently work together to ensure that these prophecies come true."
     - Anonymous

"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!"

"Animals do not have gods, they are smarter than that."
    -Ronnie Snow

"Religion provides the solace for the turmoil that it creates."
    -Byron Danelius

"Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction."
    -Blaise Pascal

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one."
    - George Bernard Shaw

    -Napoleon

"Gods are fragile things; they may be killed by a whiff of science or a dose of common sense."

quoted by Gaspar Schopp of Breslau in a letter to Conrad Rittershausen, written on the day of Bruno's burning at the stake for (among other things) the crime of being an "atheist"

"It is proof of a base and low mind for one to wish to think with the masses or majority, merely because the majority is the majority. Truth does not change because it is, or is not, believed by a majority of the people."
-- Giordano Bruno, "Giordano Bruno The Forgotten Philosopher" by John J Kessler

    - Christopher Hitchens

There are two religions on the earth, which have distinct enmity against all other religions. These two are Christianity and Islam. They are not satisfied with just observing their own religions, but are determined to destroy all other religions. That?s why the only way to make peace with them is to embrace their religion.
    - Rabindranath Tagore

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

    Thomas Paine Time

Of all the tyrannies that affect mankind, tyranny in religion is the worst; every other species of tyranny is limited to the world we live in; but this attempts to stride beyond the grave, and seeks to pursue us into eternity.

All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian, or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.

It is far better that we admitted a thousand devils to roam at large than that we permitted one such imposter and monster as Moses, Joshua, Samuel, and the Bible prophets, to come with the pretended word of God and have credit among us.

Belief in a cruel God makes a cruel man.

    Prophesying is lying professionally.

    Science is the true theology.

    A little Ben Franklin

"When a religion is good, I conceive it will support itself; and when it does not support itself, and God does not care to support it, so that its professors are obliged to call for the help of the civil power, 'tis a sign, I apprehend, of its being a bad one."

    and a touch of Jefferson

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.

    or on the lighter side:

There?s no fun in a theocracy

Religion is an insult to human dignity.

With or without it you would have
good people doing good things and
    evil people doing evil things.

But for good people to do evil things,
    that takes religion.

I regard monotheism as the greatest disaster ever to befall the human race. I see no good in Judaism, Christianity, or Islam -- good people, yes, but any religion based on a single, well, frenzied and virulent god, is not as useful to the human race as, say, Confucianism, which is not a religion but an ethical and educational system. [Gore Vidal, American novelist, At Home, 1988, from James A. Haught, ed., 2000 Years of Disbelief, Famous People with the Courage to Doubt]

Man is a Religious Animal.  He is the only Religious Animal.  He is the only animal that has the True Religion - several of them.  He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts his throat if his theology isn't straight.  He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven.  ~Mark Twain

It's a good one this, and works both ways, atheist and believer in God, but I would go further than that, and add 'based on a deep seated need to believe you are right.'
