Yeah I know. I was being facetious. Tongue I don't agree with everything Tutu has ever said or done, but that quote is worthy of being repeated by anyone in or involved with marginalized groups of any kind. Ad hominem attacks by unknown, random internet posters, aside.

Tutu's alright in my book, and the accusations of anti-Semitism against him pure slander. I was being facetious too. Tongue

yes Confusing criticism of Israel's historical and current policies towards Palestianians with anti-semitism = confusing criticism of Islamic teachings with Muslim-phobia. Two sides of the same stupid coin. I wasn't active around here when Zaephon was around, though from his old posts it seems he was big on bluster, short on rationality.

Today, give a stranger one of your smiles.  It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.  ~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.

As the bus slowed down at the crowded bus stop, the Pakistani bus conductor leaned from the platform and called out, "Six only!"  The bus stopped.  He counted on six passengers, rang the bell, and then, as the bus moved off, called to those left behind:  "So sorry, plenty of room in my heart - but the bus is full."  He left behind a row of smiling faces.  It's not what you do, it's the way that you do it.  ~The Friendship Book of Francis Gay, 1977

During my second year of nursing school our professor gave us a quiz.  I breezed through the questions until I read the last one:  "What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?"  Surely this was a joke.  I had seen the cleaning woman several times, but how would I know her name?  I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank.  Before the class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our grade.  "Absolutely," the professor said.  "In your careers, you will meet many people.  All are significant.  They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello."  I've never forgotten that lesson.  I also learned her name was Dorothy.  ~Joann C. Jones

Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle.  ~Plato

Ye, it is, funny, how often people never realise or take time to think about this. Humans are just naturally narcissistic to a certain extent.

I think it just helps us realise to think how things are from another perspective rather than just our own.

"This [mystical] communication is spiritual in character and import, and it can be apprehended only on an exalted plane of spiritual awareness [at the end of the pilgrim's journey towards the divine]...but to all others it must remain an enigma, a mystery that can never be profaned by the unworthy, being guarded, as it is, by a Dragon within themselves which they have failed to challenge and subdue."

Zero is powerful because it is infinity’s twin. They are equal and opposite, yin and yang. They are equally
paradoxical and troubling. The biggest questions in science and religion are about nothingness and eternity, the
void and the infinite, zero and infinity. The clashes over zero were the battles that shook the foundations of philosophy, of science, of mathematics,
and of religion. Underneath every revolution lay a zero—and an infinity - Charles Seife

That's a good one by Churchill. Some of his quote's are amazing. I read this the other day by him:

"I cannot forecast to you the action of Russia. It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest."

Religion is an insult to human dignity.

With or without it you would have
good people doing good things and
    evil people doing evil things.

But for good people to do evil things,
    that takes religion.

    ? Professor Steven Weinberg, 1999

Might as well contribute some of my favorites:

"The God of the Old Testament {I would say "The God of Abraham"} is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully." ~Richard Dawkins

"Any system of religion that has anything in it that shocks the mind of a child, cannot be a true system." ~Thomas Paine

"That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence." ~Christopher Hitchens

"Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it." ~Christopher Hitchens

This one is a bit long, but fantastic:

"We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Sahara. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here. We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred." ~Richard Dawkins

Is that good? Do I win the prize? Do I get free cookies?
