     OP - September 07, 2009, 02:10 PM

I just bought hardback edition of The Greatest Show on Earth by Richard Dawkins for ?5 in store at WHS. RRP is ?20, currently on offer for ?10. But if you use a voucher found here: http://marketing.whsmith.co.uk/images/7/1.8.50_WHSmith_Welcome_Voucher.pdf or here:http://www.hotukdeals.com/visit/?m=80&q=197891 you get additional ?5 off. This really is a bargain; even the cashier was a bit suspicious.

Did you just print out the vouchers from the pdf file. The voucher says 'Photocopies will not be accepted' wouldn't printouts be just like a photocopy?

That is just so they dont overdo the special offer and can control it.  In reality they will be indistinguishable as the print quality / photocopy quality will vary from machine to machine

Is Richard Dawkins getting sponsorships or endorsments from somewhere? Because I honestly don't think he can cover the printing cost of his book with such low prices!  Huh?

Surely his sales are massive and so would cover the costs. I doubt they would price them at below cost price. He is in that select category of bestselling authors - is he not?

Not necessarily - its more likely to be a 'loss leader' - a popular item that brings people into the store (much like some newsagents and cigarettes, where they only make a few pence on each packet sold, but its a regular purchase and is usually bought with sweets/newspapers/magazines or whatever)

The best book I've read on evolution is "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry A Coyne.

    http://www.amazon.com/Why-Evolution-True-Jerry-Coyne/dp/0670020532/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1252342714&sr=8-1

    It's objective and unbiased.

Guys, this offer still on? I just asked a relative in the UK to get me the book and send it to me as I can not get it here from home, and they sold her the book for 15 pounds? They said it was 20 pounds original price, and with the voucher they took 5 pounds off-------> 15 pounds!  Huh?

yeah the voucher is still ?5, but they may have realised that the Dawkins book was already at half price or changed their minds, and stopped the half price offer as well.  It worked for me at that time though..

I've still got my copy lying next to my bed - didnt inspire me during the first few pages tbh.  What did you think Nineberry, or anyone else that has read it?

I enjoyed it, the last two chapters are the best where he's talking about the evolutionary arms race.  I felt very brainy after I'd finished it, I now understand dendochronology.   dance

There's a lot in it that I had already known and understood, so I found the first chapters quite boring, but then it got better because he then used some examples that I hadn't heard of before.

It is definitely great for someone who hadn't known so much about evolution before. But if you want the full monty, I recommend reading "The Ancestor's Tale"

I would also recommend "Why Evolution is True" by Jerry A Coyne. It's probably one of the best introductions I've read so far.

I remember learning about this and thinking it is so cool - at some museum years ago. Seeing the circles in a slice from an old tree with notes on it saying things like "The Battle of Hastings took place in the year this circle was formed"  or - "The Magna Carta was signed here" and stuff like that. There was also one that showed the "overlap" so a particularly good or bad year was matched with an older tree that had the same good or bad year and so one could take it back further and further.

I'm still reading the book - and although there is much I already knew, I am really enjoying it and it is certainly making the whole thing clearer in my mind.

Just clarifying things like the common mistake; 'we evolved from monkeys'. I was aware we did not evolve from modern monkeys - but such a saying is of course inaccurate - humans and monkey's evolved from a common ancestor.

same here, when I read the beginning and leafed through the middle it just seemed like a book that was preaching to the already converted..  but will try to motivate myself to dedicate some time towards it after some of the comments I have read here...
