    When I was a kid, one thing I used to love but also hate was Jinn stories. I was terrified of Jinns for most of my childhood because people used to always tell me these stories about when a person saw a jinn, or when a jinn possessed someone etc.

    Did anyone else have this experience?

    Also, I have heard so many jinn stories, but I have not heard a single one where 2 or more people have seen the same jinn at the same time!

    I didn't believe in jinn and I wasn't scared of them-neither did my dad even though he was a wahhabi. I believed in ghosts though and ghost stories scared the shit out of me.

    I went to the doctor while in Pakistan recently cuz of backache as I slept with the AC on, when the weather has gotten cooler due to rains. The doctor took one look at me and said that I was unhappy in my marriage and that he had jinns to sort me out.  Cheesy

    I left with a course of painkillers for my back, he gave me an appointment to come the next day. Never went back, can't think what he would have told his jinns to do to me!

    BTW, I have never experienced jinns but my hubby has! Will ask him again the full story when he comes back from Taravi prayers.

    A doctor, who had been to university for 7 years, said that you were unhappy in your marriage! What a joke! In Pakistan, it seems that so much is blamed on Jadoo and Jinns. I know someone who is having an affair with some woman, and his parents are saying that the woman who he is having an affair with put Jadoo on him and that is why he is being unfaithful to his wife!

    What a way to hide from the real issues!

    I was just going to say!

    In the gulf Arab wahhabi community Jinns are hushed up and hardly anyone ever talks about it. In the Levant jinns are sometimes spoken about, but I haven't heard of an excorcism or anything-but there are rumours here and there (maybe it's because they travel away from wahhabis and have some sufi influence).

    In Pakistani and Indian culture however, Jinns seem to be everywhere, nearly everyone of my friends at my "madrassa" had at one point seen a jinn and some had been possessed!

    Why Pakistan and India?

    For majority of my childhood, and years into my early teen years, I was very scared of Jinns. I used to believe in them and were deathly scared of em. But later as I started to investigate Islam, Jinns were the first things I investigated, because the belief in Jinns didn't make sense to me and was the first subject to cast doubt in me of Islam. It turned out--as with everything else about Islam--they were man made.

    To this day, I'm not scared anymore, but I still feel very little bits of my past fear creep in. Perhaps the fear will never go away, but I'm most certainly glad it has greatly reduced--all thanks to rational thinking.

    I've never been afraid of jinns as my family have never really talked about them. I was quite sceptical of them. One of my mates in high school thought she was possessed by one! She was always bit crazy though so I didn't know whether to take her seriously at the time or not.

    iran too. mostly stories from villages. apparently the persian jinns look like centaurs (half horse, half man) and they have nothing better to do than to troll dark alleys and scare people Smiley

    Morocco also is steeped in old stories about banshee's wailing near the ocean, or jinn seen lingering in the old ruins, almost everyone claims to have seen something over there, but I haven't.

    I used to believe in Jinn, seemed pretty easy to believe in considering I believed in dragons, elves and fairies too.  Cheesy

    Banshees?  They're Irish I didn't know the Moroccans had them too.

    Ah I see.  Interesting that they have sometjing similar though.  Ireland has its equivalent of jinns too, the faery folk.  Fairies aren't nice in Irish folklore, they are quite sinister, nobody believes in them any more though.

    Yeah, it's really interesting to me, I find pagan folklore is much like abrahamic, in that you can find it's equal/similar content in another cultures pagan myths too, I used to be quite into reading up and making connections about these things.

    I love Irish folklore too, when I'm a free woman, I still intend to travel around Ireland checking out some of the sites associated with some of those myths.  dance

    Ok, he apparently witnessed a jinn inside a little girl who was being exorcised by a mullah when he was a kid and can't remember all the details apart from "her voice wasn't hers"...........hmmm, it just reminds me of the movie....

    You know I saw that video when I was still deathly scared of Jinns--looking at it now, I still get creeped out by it a bit, but in the back of my mind, I know it's fake.

    I believe this need to rationalize bs stories like Jinns and exorcism was one of the main reasons why I'm pursuing a masters in Psychology. My psychology professor saw this video (who is also a clinical therapist) and she immediately said "she's schizophrenic, shes showing all the symptoms."

    Ok, someone else I have heard of in Pakistan has apparently turned into a fruitcake cuz he built his house on a spot that some jinns occupied according to local villagers.

    You get all sorts of stories wherever you ask.
