  • Mein Teil
     OP - September 16, 2009, 12:59 PM

I love this song. But it always makes me hungry.

    Heute treff' ich einen Herrn
Der hat mich zum Fressen gern
    Weiche Teile und auch harte
    stehen auf die Speisekarte

    /Rammstein

    Today I met a gentleman
He said he would love to have me for dinner.
    Soft parts and also hard
    are on the menu.

The joke is in the expression "jemanden zum Fressen gern haben".
It means to really like/appreciate somebody, but literally it means
    to want to devour him.

    /Stefan, sick and bored

    What does it mean?

reminds me of the gay man in germany that devoured his lover's penis by mutual consent, after frying it like s sausage & sauteeing it with garlic & pepper, and then killing him http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/3286721.stm

What are you sick with?  (Desparate attempt to change the subject).

Dunno. They are checking if it is the oinker.

Feels like a mild flu with the exception of seriously swollen and hurting glands.

Hmm? "to like somebody"? Only verb and an indefinite object.
You need to be a bit more verbose... :-)

So precisely which glands are swollen and to what extent? bunny

Devious, treacherous, murderous, neanderthal, sub-human of the West. bunny

Well, I wouldn't worry if I was you.  I think the swine flu scare has been blown out of proportion anyway.  I doubt its any more dangerous than normal, seasonal flu.

It isn't. I hav doc's word on that. The scare is economical. They are worried too many people will get sick.

But I am mildly asthmatic and have had a heart issue so they are treating me with kid's gloves.

I'd translate it like this and it even rhymes neatly:

    Quote
Today I will meet a mister
Who'd love to have me for dinner
Soft parts as well as hard
are present on the menu card

"Zum Fressen gern haben" is an idiom and could be translated as "to love sb. to bits and pieces."

You mean which "Teil" (part) of me?

Only soft ones. Which are now hard.

Well done. And thank's for the English idiom to go with it.

Do you know any other plays on words in Rammstein's music? I myself am not good enough in German to recognize them.

They seem to have a heck of a sense of humour.

The sentence "to have somebody for dinner" is not an idiom, but it has a double meaning as well, and surprisingly fits very well as a translation of the German lyrics.

I don't know, I never listen to their music. I generally go without listening to music for weeks, and when I do I listen to famous pieces of classical music most of the time.

The derailed subject is eating you alive, is it?

I remember the "have for dinner" thing from Silence of the Lambs.
    An excellent film.

Me, I love music. All kinds. Currently, Rammstein is taking turns with Malouma (Mauretanian nightingale) at home.

Did you see the sequel, and when he is eating dinner at the table the Hannibal helps himself to his brain

    Yep. Kinda mind-boggling.

I get associations to 2001 a Space Odyssey, when Hal is being dismantled. A gradual shut-down.

The best bit about that scene is the way in the which the man at the table, despite having his brain consumed out of his skull pot, continues eating his food nonchalantly like nothing is happening

Yep. Mr Hannibal really knows his neurology. He chose the right part. But it is clear that the guy is slowly shutting down, isn't it? Daisy daisy...
