  • I Never read the Quran / Never prayed all 5 times
     OP - September 22, 2009, 10:13 AM

Iam a born muslim.I was an atheist since i was 16 or so.Unlike some people having problems in their religious family.I dont have that problem,Iam happy for that.In my home, they know i wont believe & they never interfere. My rules, thats good for me.So before 16,,,,As  i remember....my mom compells me to pray sometimes.Iam the only one who dont use to beleive in GOD from that time itself. The relatives are religious. So it will be uncomfortable when going to their house.I use to tell,i will not come to their house, but mom forces me and take me there.Well that was before as i was small and i afraid some. Now its not.Eventhough not so strict.... as this is not arabian country and the people are not so strictly follow islam as in arabian country.

I prayed some...Not all 5 times... Those prayers are less only...and eventhough i dont know some words properly while praying  Roll Eyes

I never read the Quran...as i never was that much religious. So i dont have interest to read that. Roll Eyes

Some 3 times as i remember that i have fasted. In that...Only 1 time i fasted for 30 days. The other two are less days...

During fasting, oneday when it was about the time to eat..as before they were praying.I suddenly took one date and put it in my mouth  Roll Eyes They saw, anyway no problem. In that case that fast is not considered as fast as i ate that date before the eating time.Doesnt matter.... whistling2

About school days i remember onething,,they use to let the fasting peoples go home little earlier. That is...Before the last one period fasting peoples can go home. Many hindus use to get jealous..oh shit if iam a muslim,i would have gone home earlier.

In P.T period...The master use to tell the students to do exercise..so on.But they wont tell the fasting students to do so.

I use to lie using the fasting in school days.....

In P.T period..when the master calls every students to do exercise..some boys use to hide.Fasting students has no problems. If the master knows that the muslim students are fasting,he wont call.He once called me....I said..Sir,iam fasting ...he said..Oh..ok u take rest.Actually i was not fasting at that time.I use to go to home at afternoon 1 hour break and eat lunch and return to school. No one knows this... Cheesy
And as i already said Before the last one period fasting peoples can go home little earlier..I also will go home.Sometimes there will be special classes.I will escape from that also.  grin12

Good work, reading it in anything other than a foreign language means your doing something that most muslims have never done  Cheesy

Obviously if you admit this to muslims they will say that this was the reason you turned away from Islam, that you never fully threw yourself into it - despite the fact that people like Hassan were totally full-on believers but still apostated.

I think I managed to complete the Quran by the time I was 10. I finished it again and repeated it for for Grand Fathers anniversary every year till I was 15 I think. I was about 11 when I learnt how to pray.

As far as orthodox Muslims go i'm the worst when it comes to praying mainly because my parents did not pressurise me with religion which I am grateful for however they still want me to know about my religion and they prefer I read the english translation so I understand it. So that's what I'm doing right now.

Which, amusingly, the Qur'an itself repeatedly warns against!

Well the Qur'an I have to admit does emphasize the need for he individual to use their own mind to accept Islam or reject it but then funnily enough it contradicts itself by saying God wills people to Islam. The Qur'an is a tough riddle to crack if it even is one lol

It comes from the fact that Muhammad's 'revelations' took the form of whatever he needed at that very moment in time to achieve some sort of political/social/personal end. And he did so over 23 years, so there was no cohesive point of view on which to base these opinions. Accordingly, you get very contradictory messages - how people stray from allah, but throughout the Qur'an you get repeated messages about how only allah seals hearts, etc.

I wasn't made to READ the quran, I was made to learn the sura's in Arabic without understanding what they meant.  Just repitition work.  I had to be able to recite it back to my father after a set amount (a week max) and if I failed I got beaten.

So by the time I was about 9/10 I could recite almost all of the quran by rote, and still never understood what I was saying or what it related to.

I was taught to pray and clean myself before the age of 8, and I was expected to pray all 5 at that age too.  I was also made to cover up with the hijab at that age too, and fast the entire day  Roll Eyes.

He did eventually buy us a translated quran when I was around 10, and then I read some of it off my own back, however it was quite a boring and hard to understand book at that age so I would hide a smaller book inside it's covers and pretend I was obeying my father.  Tongue

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I see your point with Hass, but surely they would be right that someone never fully threw themself into Islam if they never read the koran and never prayed?

    Ha Ha.

They would be right about that, but that does not mean that if the person understood Islam properly, they would still be a Muslim. Maybe the person never really did believe properly in Islam and came to the conclusion early on that a lot of it didn't make sense and thus, never really bothered with it.
