     OP - September 30, 2009, 02:07 PM

Does anyone ever cringe when they remember things they used to do/say when they were a Muslim.

I was walking down the street today and I really really cringed when I remembered inviting people to go on "jihad" on February 15 2003 (the anti Iraq war demonstration)!

I was thinking about other things I used to say and I was full of these ridiculous statements! Such as "there is no such thing as offensive Jihad". What a twat.

I cringe whenever I remember trying to defend my husbands right to smack me around sometimes, cos I deserved it and how he was just doing it islamically because he had a right. vomit

Or when I used to proudly boast about how islam came to free slaves, and muslims didn't have slaves.  Jesus I was dumb.  Roll Eyes

Was that defending it to other people, or to yourself?

I used to do that too! Now, I really hate discussing slavery with Muslims because you can't do it! They just have the same tired arguments and you just go round and round in circles.

My cringeworthy moment was looking down on people who didn't have fist length beards!

Both, by defending it to other people, and trying to make it sound fair, I was trying to defend it to myself so that I didn;t feel even more like a loser for staying with him.

I used to cringe inside saying it anyway, even back then, but I wanted to be a good muslim and stop my mind rebelling against what every other muslim seemed happy to accept.

I cringe more now though lol because now I feel stupid to have wasted any time even trying. 015

Yeah, looking down on people. It really annoys me to think that i used to do that over trivial matters.

My cringeworthy moment has to be when I castigated one of my husband's friends for wearing Catterpillar boots because 'they build the bulldozers which are used to bulldoze Palestinian homes'.

My cringeworthy moment is when I was very young, around 9. One of my dad's mates had just told me that taking presents from Kuffar (including Christians and Jews) was haram and that Muslims should never accept anything from them.

That day my dad took me to a garden party held by his colleagues-all of his colleagues were Kuffar and there was loads of brilliant food, drink and a lot of my favourite stuff. I sat in the corner miserable for 5 hours while my dad and brother enjoyed the party and eat and drank while I watched by. I was really hungry, and really wanted to eat (we were saving our appetites for the party) but fearing hell I didn't

Ironically the bastard who ruined that for me was an asylum seeker who later lived on benefits from the UK government.

    Hypocrite.

Having to pretend that Muslims did wadhu differently in England, after being pestered into praying in a mosque with some friends on the West Bank because I couldn't remember how to do it properly Smiley

Yeah, that's cringeworthy alright, and in the worst possible way.

I'm not Muslim and I won't wear CAT boots for that reason.

Lol. I tried not drinking coca cola for a while but it tastes so nice!

Still plenty of non-Islamic reasons to boycott Coke:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Coca-Cola#Bottling_plant_deaths

Besides, the coke in the UK doesn't taste nearly as good as the coke over here (or in Mexico for that matter). At least it didn't in the mid 90s when I was last there-- I think they're still using the "New Coke" recipe over there that we Yanks rejected.

Yeah, but it is still probably the nicest tasting substance known to man (after Leffe).

    - being 7 and crying that others weren't doing their prayers
    - being 10 and not watching MJ dancing
    - being 15 and being annoyed on a road journey we didn't stop and pray

I agree with mr Adiere, Coke is the tastiest substance known to man, I would drink it all the time if it wasn't so unhealthy

And comparing it to Pepsi is sheer blasphemy.

Sprite > Coke  grin12 grin12 grin12 And I dont like soft drinks that much either nor do I drink Alcohol either  parrot

    My cringe-worthy moments:

    - As a conservative teen, making an angry face at my little sisters and female cousins for not covering their heads when Adhaan was heard or when a du'a was recited for some special occasion.

    - Using the 'i am a muslim' as an excuse to not mix with girls .... oh my fucking word why??!!!  finmad Those teenage school years would have been so damn better if I didnt think like a twat >_< I could have gotten a girlfriend and puppy love  lipsrsealed Girls thought I was very cute ffs !!!

    - Feeling guilty after I really needed some 'alone time', and then not understanding why I had wet dreams after I avoided it (explicit..but hey). It could have saved me from all that laundering !!

    - Being still regarded as the ideal Shia role model by my relatives for their kids, at least to those who dont know of my atheism (that number is dwindling ^_^)

    - Debating too much online about how Shia > Sunni and how Imam-e-Zaman would come and kick ass and telling the story of Karbala to my friends who didnt know about it.

    - Around 18 months back, trying to justify how Quran was scientifically accurate and said stuff scientists only discovered in a discussion with Brits in my Hall of Residence, one of the lads mentioned 'Well, didnt the Greeks know about man being made of congealed blood idea before Islam?' I was silent, so I said 'God knows best my friend'....I think that start a chain of events that eventually led me away from religion. (and oddly enough the main topic was Secular Humanism by an atheist speaker which I proudly call myself today).

Wow, Berbs, I simply can't imagine you being that person! Just goes to show how far along you've come.  Afro

    My cringeworthy moments:
    - Defending the Islamic state of Pakistan from those awful kaffir Hindus who I'd been taught had been just impossible to live with, on the basis that Islam is a superior way of life.  vomit This was during the late 90's when both India and Pakistan had first tested their nukes to show up each other.
    - Being the eldest, I was brainwashed into leading the pack of my cousins into doing maatam and azadari more vociferously than other people who were at the shia festivals.  Roll Eyes
    - During about a year and half period when I tried being a "born again" muslim, and tried to force myself to re-embrace Islam and Muslims and I went on a couple of dates with potential husbands that my mom tried to set me up with. One paindu after another.  Cheesy

    You heard it right IsLame.

During my uni years in Manchester (Sept 2004 to Jan 2009) I lived in a hall of residence which has a very vibrant social activity structure. From pub and bar parties, to discussions and talks done by speakers on invite. The hall chaplain has some good contacts from all sorts of faiths etc, where a speaker would often come and talk about some aspect of religion, and then there would be a question and answer type discussion amongst the various students attending the talk as well as the speakers and staff. I was invited to attend by a friend who lived in the same hall back then who is a rather devout Muslim and was actually doing a degree on Islamic studies before he left Uni in his second year to go home and sell cars with his dad and said he can preach/learn Islam on his own.

That day, was a talk about Humanism and Secular Humanism by an atheist who called himself a Humanist. I cant remember what exactly was said and discussed, but in the question answer session and discussion somehow Islam came up for a few minutes, I tried my best to explain but it was embarrassingly futile.

Vodka is probably the worst spirit in the world. The thing that annoys me about vodka is 99% of people who drink it, drink it because they don't like the taste of alcohol.

I know you do have vodka afficionados, but the majority of people who drink vodka, drink it only to get drunk.

    I'd wager you like wine....

I really cannot stand the way vodka is defiled by mixing it with other stuff.. like red bull and even pineapple juice (for FFS). I cannot say that it tastes good and yet I do like the sensation that comes from drinking the stuff straight.  Especially in the cold.
