  • Where does Islamic prayer come from?

    The prayer ritual, of standing up, bending, crouching on all fours, turning left then right, is very different from other forms of prayer practised by Christian, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus etc.

    I was wondering where it derived from, it is too unique to think Muhammed invented it on his own.  Does anyone know? 

    I realise the names and timings of prayer are all derived from the Sabean faith, and was wondering if the actual ritual came from them too.  It would be quite a powerful argument to use against Muslims if they were to realise that their method of worhip (which they maintain as a perfect exercise brought upon by Allah) actually came from the very idol worhippers whom they scoff at!

    I read somewhere that it was standard prayer for the pagans aswell at that time, although not as frequently, and slightly changed up a little.

    I mean nothing in Islam is unique, but then again it does make the claim that it is the final piece of the puzzle and therefore on that it can incorporate pagan rituals with ease.

    Hanafis used to pray 3 times a day, similar rituals as islam, goto haj in the haram month, have ablution. cut the hands of thieves, ban pork, ban alcohol, stone, ban the burial of daughters, (grow beards?). Hanafism, not to be confused with the 'Hanafi Mazhab - way', was a yemeni religion. Muhammad Grand-father was considered an elder from that religion and we can expect Mo who was taken care of by his grandfather really absorbed the teachings.

    Hanafis' prophet was Abraham although their stories were a bit distorted of him.

    Very little is known about the "Hunafa" except that they were monotheists. I don't think much more is known about them other than what little is written in the Sira literature.

    Rahman was a yemeni god and in the (chronological) first 55 verses of the koran muhammad refers to rahman, maslama, the guy abu bakr killed during the yamama (ridda wars) was a prophet of the Rahaman and also preached things very similar to the hanafis.  I am not sure though, if rahman is the same god of the hanafis.

    I thought Rahman was one of the ninety-nine attributes meaning merciful.

    I remember hearing that the Ansar preferred to refer to God as 'Ar-Rahman', and the Muhajiroon asked Mo what of it, and he said it was cool.

    HaRakhaman is also a name of God in Judaism. I've heard this saying that Ar-Rahman was a yemeni god, dunno what to say of it. Huh?

    I forget where I read it from, or if I myself thought it, but I had it as

    Alif = Allah
    Lam= li (to)
    Meem= Muhammad

    or with Alif Lam Ra

    Allah
    li
    Rasool.

    The standard salafi translation of Qur'an (Noble, Hilali/Khan) says no one but Allah knows the letters' meaning (Ta Ha, Ha Meem, Kaf ha ya 'ayn Sod, etc.) mean, you have to look hard to find someone try to explain them.

    ChristianPrince has a theory about Alif-Lam-Meem

    Basically he said it was based on a Hebrew-Aramaic code developed for persecuted Christians in the Roman Empire, and the code when you get down to it is "Christ is the Lord"-he also claims that Alif-Lam-Meem was put in by Waraqa ibn nawful.

    It's just his own agenda that drives it really.

    Islamic prayer is a ritualised version of pagan prayers to the idols, the movements were similar and so were some of the duas but it was amalgamated. Or so I read.

    I will have to dig for sources but I might find some.

    Why would Allah put 3 letters that mean nothing to anyone in the Quran?  Whats the point from a believers point of view  Huh?

    It's supposed to be a mystery that just show how advanced Allah is or some shit. That or it was just forgotten why. Who knows.

    Perhaps Muhammed corrupted the word from Allah, and Allah was actually asking for 'some fries to go with that please'

    I've actually heard Muslims say that this mystery is one of the miracles of the Qur'an. Not sure how they figure that, though.
